CAVE is a psychedelic band from chicago that you may not be familiar with and with whom you may not want to be unfamiliar. their slight similarities with Neu & Can may encourage familiarity. listen to their record Psychic Summer or the ep, Pure Moods.

i wanted to post their song "Made in Malaysia," but youtube only has an attenuated version of it. here is a new song, which is relatively controlled & doesn't sound too much like their earlier work:

I'm only seven and a half minutes into this, but I feel as though I can type, listen, and still feel like I'm doing the (unfinished) song justice with what I'm typing.

This is the best kind of music. It comes on slowly, seduces you right from the start. It's the kind of song that rewards you in spades for giving it your attention, and it's the kind of song that will sound slightly different to you each time you listen to it. I can't picture musicians with instruments when I listen to this. Just colors, shapes, and feelings. I'm not watching the accompanying video, but I can only imagine that it contains nothing but those three things.

Can I buy this in a store in Houston, do you think?

i doubt it, but i'm not sure. they should have records on amazon or a website (that is, if they have one). if not, one of my friends is friends with them. i'm sure i could get you an album gratis. glad you like it--they really put it all together on the most recent record, and i like and respect their growth. but what appealed to me when i first heard them was the scattershot repetition in a lot of the songs, and so i was a little reluctant to post that song

There's plenty of repetition there, in patches. I don't want an album for free. I want to give these guys money. Let me give them money, curley.

i didn't mean to suggest there isn't repetition on the new record--there is plenty. i only meant it is much more focused.

i won't stop you from giving these guys money

fact: one night last summer i saw them (and bill callahan) play in a circus tent

There's only ever been one Smog album at Cactus Music and Record Ranch. :(

Let's talk motorik. I get the feeling that CAVE knows their way around a factorial groove.

Full Disclosure: I didn't know that factorial was an actual word, with a definition different than what I intended. I meant to conjure up images of factories and machinery.

they most certainly do. there's another chicago band i think you'd like: Disappears. Steve Shelley was the drummer on their last (possibly last two) records. they do the krautrock thing, too.

I've heard a lot about Disappears, but I've never listened to them. Shelley always emerges victorious after getting buried by clouds of noise in the studio.

That right there is excellent RM recall coupled with the kind of regional reference that cuts to the quick.

I live less than 1000 yards from a Randall's, but I'll drive down to H.E.B. nine times out of ten if I need even the most modest amount of groceries.
