I was introduced to Chan Marshall (pen-name: Cat Power) during the summer by a friend of mine, and I really like her. Anyone else ever given her a listen? Ed sang on Evolution, the closing track of her latest album.

I have and I really like her songs. I am only familiar with her last album. I'd like to listen to the previous ones to compare.

I love I don't blame you, closely followed by good woman and maybe not.

Something very special about her voice.

She's probably my favorite female vocalist. Eddie sings on Good Woman too. They are both amazing songs. You Are Free is a great album.

I have You Are Free; it's one of those albums you don't listen to often but when you do it just blows you away, because you've forgotten how amazing it is. I saw it on vinyl in a store this morning actually and I was very tempted.... I resisted though. Got Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited instead, which is just.... beyond words.

Chan Marshall is one of the few female vocalists I actually find interesting. Others just don't spark any interest, but her voice is certainly something special. You Are Free is simply a mellow masterpiece...

I only own you are free but it is a very good album. I love putting He War on mixes when i make them.

very haunting and beautiful music (she is like the female Elliott Smith).You Are Free is great-my favorite song is "I Dont Blame You" on it.

I heard I Don't Blame You is about Kurt Cobain, which makes the song even more powerful.

i was addicted to you are free for about a month when i got it. great album. and, i agree, her voice is very moving.

i wasn't able to resist when i saw it on vinyl last year. one of the few albums i have on vinyl, but not on cd, actually (although i do have it through mp3s on a cd).

damn you and your dylan on vinyl-having. once i saw blood on the tracks on audiophile vinyl and i somehow resisted. how i do that and then blow $20 at the bar is beyond me....

I heard that too. At first I just thought that the person who said that it was about him was an idiot, becuase sometimes people like to read that sort of thing into songs when it's not there. But then I listened to the song again and having heard that, it put the song into perspective and as you said, it became more powerful.

I'm trying to think of where I heard it was about Kurt, but I'm drawing a blank. So for all we know it's just speculation.

I know for sure that I read it in a review in Rolling Stone, if it helps any.

Funny enough, I Don't Blame You is my favorite song too.

What's really wierd though is I didn't even realize it was Ed singing on those last songs. Of course I'm usually falling asleep that far into an album, but I am surprised I didn't notice that anyway.

I don't blame you for not noticing it was Ed singing. It's not the booming Ed of the early 90's. He sings in such a sublte way that really compliments Cat Power's voice. Listen to the songs with a pair of headphones and you can distinguish Ed's voice much better.

Yeah, I read in a review somewhere, either allmusic or Pitchfork, that I Don't Blame You is about Cobain.

Just started getting into this album. Really like a lot of the songs, especially I Don't Blame You, He War, and Evolution.

my favorite song by far, in terms of catchiness, is "good woman". the opening of that gets me every time.

great album, but for some reason i've never been able to convince myself to buy any more of her stuff.

That's probably the one i like the most too. I haven't listened to the album in ages, I might have to give it a spin tonight. Maybe the reason I don't listen to it much is because it's so melancholy.
