yeah i love tool although they are a bit of a mood band for me. the muscianship is amazing and not enough can be said about maynard. compare his vocals in tool to that in apc and at times its almost like a completely different singer. probably my fav line from a tool song......is this a test? is has to be, otherwise i can't go on. ticks and leeches is there are better angry song in existence?

I agree, the anger expressed in "Ticks and Leeches" is so tangible. You just don't hear that everywhere...
I love Tool. I've only been a fan now for a couple of years, but I've really grown attached to the music. I think it would be very difficult for me to pick a favorite song, because I feel like they actually mold together so well. I do hold "Parabol/Parabola" close to my heart because there's that sense of joy in childbearing and birth, but it's done in such a haunting way. It is a declaration as much as a memory of the moments of sanctuary and spirituality that only a child you've born can bring you.
"Schism" is definitely excellent, and I note Danny Carey's bass drum work in the end of the song as one of the great moments in music, at least in my mind. It sounds like there are a thousand bass drums being played by a thousand men. The end of that song takes you to the brink of sanity with his work. There's a line in that song that just gives me the chills when Maynard sings it. "Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion." It's one of my favorite lines in all of music, and it's delivered with that chilling, haunting, menacing tone of voice that is Maynard's instrument.
"Prison Sex" is wonderful, and that too has some distinct lines that I just think are so brilliant read, but really expressed and provoked by Maynard. "I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this shit, blood and cum on my hands!" They really put you in a frightening place, because you're in the mind of the victim briefly in the beginning, and then in the mind of the rapist. It's so clever, and they approach the story they want to tell in a very unique way. The way they choose is to really bring the listener to the mind they are describing, and it's quite an experience.
I love so many of their songs, so I'm going to have to leave it at that for now, and come back and talk more about some of them, like "Jimmy," "Stinkfist," "The Grudge," "Sober," etc. I'll be back soon!

The song sounds so well put together, as does the entire album. I thought it would be such a pain to learn how to play, but it's rather simplistic. They have a deep understanding of what sounds good.

man where to start with tool. definately 46&2. and jimmy ("under a dead ohio sky"). and third eye is just intense. disgustipated, sober, prison sex, h, the grudge, the list goes on and on and on. i really cant complain about a band that releases just 1 album every 4-5 years, when those albums are the caliber of tool's. them and pj are the upper echelon for me. i can die happy having been able to enjoy their music

i love that line as well. i guess the title hooker with a penis (lol great name) may mean my interpration is incorrect but i have to come to think of that line different perhaps from others. i see it as a bit of a sledge towards ultra-cool slackers who refuse to "serve the man". they refuse to be part of mainstream society because capitalism is "evil". however maynard points out that we are all "the man" and we all need to contribute otherwise you are merely leeching off the more productive people around you. again perhaps i have got that line wrong but that is what i get from it so......

Advice for you, little buddy.
Before you point your finger
You should know that
I'm the man,
If I'm the fuckin' man
Then you're the fuckin' man as well
So you can
Point that fuckin' finger up your ass.
All you know about me is what I've sold you, Dumb fuck. I sold out long before you ever heard my name. I sold my soul to make a record, Dip shit, And you bought one.

Fun song to play on bass guitar.
I have a bass just sitting here. There is no way I could play that. I'll just stick to playing Not For You since it's basically all I can play on guitar. Good thing I bought all this stuff that just rots away in the corner

It helps if you listen to intensely fast music and try to play along with it, then go back to something like Schism and it's a whole lot easier to play.
