love them.
funny thing about that Fleet Foxes cover... i thought their voices were annoying and kind of awful when that thing came out back in 2008... so it turned me off of them and i didn't even bother w/ their debut EP and record... woops
saw them 2 weeks ago and the show was just stunning
they were amazing on Conan last night too (did Emmylou)
Their harmonies are gorgeous but the lyrics to that song are a dealbreaker. Just dreadful.
Okay there STIP
I know, I know. But this kind of gimmicky folkie cliche:
I'll be your Emmylou, and I'll be your June If you'll be my Gram, and my Johnny, too No, I'm not asking much of you Just sing, little darling, sing with me
is a songwriting pet peeve of mine. I'll admit I might have a bit of an oversensitivity to it, but I nonetheless find it icky and obvious.
I went on the band's website to see if I'd like some of their other songs better, but unfortunately much of what they seem to be doing is indicative of what I dislike about a lot of these neo-folk groups like The Civil Wars and The Avett Brothers--one or two moderately interesting surface-level aesthetics trying to shoulder the weight of a bunch of average or below-average songwriting. With all due respect, it's coffeehouse open mic stuff.

how is that lyric any less "lame" or cliche than a good chunk of Johnny Cash's lyrics tho?
and Avett's have been around since '99, don't judge them based on their last (and weakest) record that Rubin produced. the Gleam EP is amazing.
