Post subject:  an REM concert review for those interested
I had never seen REM live until they played the LA greek theatre wenesday, even though I’ve been a long time fan since the 80’s. So this is the point of view of not a new fan but a new comer in the live world of REM.

The first band was a bunch of goofy guys called five eight, also from athens, georgia. At that time the theatre was not even half full, a lot of people still waiting outside for REM's turn, which I thought was kind of rude for the opening band.. But they didn't care much, they said they got a bottle of wine from REM and one of them looked quite drunk and funny... keeping on making jokes. Even though I really enjoyed the music.. I am not so sure about the lyrics but hey…

Then comes the men of the hour.. They opened with begin the begin which was a really good surprise. They had to do some of their new songs of course which I wasn't familiar with... but those boys could have played anything I wouldn't have mind. They also played some reveal which I never got into, and a few old songs but not all the ones I had on my dream list .... Nothing from my fav album, murmur and no automatic. But with such a wide catalogue of songs I guess it would be hard to satisfy everyone with their fav songs. One would have to wait for the "reunion" tour for that kind of dream list.

They had the crowd really going when they did Bad Day, What's the frequency Kenneth and the closing song, man on the moon. but I wish they would have skipped on losing my religion.. I heard it way too much... But that's just me and I shouln’t get too spoiled on a first concert…

My fav moments: begin the begin, walk unafraid, which is my fav from up, Life and How to Live It, Cuyahoga, Electrolite.

Of course Michael Stipe did a few political statements regarding the presidential elections and even changed his shirt on stage to wear a kerry Tee. When he threw his harmonica in the crowd I wished I had been closer to the stage to get a chance at it....LOL That and because people seemed to have more fun in the front section than where I stood, the mid section of the theatre.

They played longer than they were supposed to (at list that's what they said), but no matter what time flies too quickly when you're having fun.

I can’t tell if it’s their best performance, after all it's the first concert of a long tour, They sounded great musically but I am not into their new album and it's the first time I hear those songs... but for me it was a treat just being there regardless. So I can't really give an objective review even though I am sure people that have seen them in the past would evaluate it better or might not have been as impressed as I had been.

- Mike Mills is quite an energetic bass player
- Peter buck was almost invisible if it wasn't for the sound of his guitar
-...and well, I have to say that I enjoyed Stipe's stage performance, his great voice and energy. I will certainly go see them again on another tour, no matter the album or the songs, just because they’re a great live band, and hoping that I will see them play"leave" on stage.

I had a great time. And I got myself a really cool REM Tee shirt! I think I never spend that much money on a tee shirt! $28 !!!! But hell!!! I really like that Tee Shirt!!! LOL And who wouldn't want to contribute to REM wealthy life style? A half polyester Tee shirt not made in sweatshops.. why not?

Thanks for the review. I wont see them this year, but I did last year and it was awesome. REM is my second favorite band and Nightswimming is my second favorite song (behind Strange Currencies). :P

I went to the berkely show on friday

and the only automatic song played was drive

which i dearly love but i was angered cause there was no everybody hurts, or night swimming or nothing

Well, I missed on that one. did you go?


I caught them on last fall's tour . . . it was pretty stellar. I've been seeing REM for about 16 years now (saw them on the Green tour and on the Monster tour in Europe) and they haven't sounded better. They played both Nightswimming and Sweetness Follows when I saw them last. However, the Nightswimming was during the first encore. No opener there. I think they opened with Orange Crush.

.. what I meant and didn't express properly not any of the one I would Have liked from automatic. I heard man on the moon too many times, it has been overplayed.. like losing my religion on out of time...
