Neil's made many brilliant albums throughout his career, but there's something special about On the Beach and Tonight's the Night. I consider those two his crown jewels. I'll throw in a little more love for Ragged Glory too. |

Over And Over is one of my favorite Neil tunes, but for some reason, there is only one known performance of it, 11-13-90 at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. It is a first class sounding audience recording, 3 sets of balls-out electric nirvana including incredible performances of Love And Only Love, Love To Burn, Surfer Joe (kicks all kinds of ass), and the one and only known live performance of T-Bone. Ragged Glory might have been the first Neil album I ever got on CD (I had my dad's old copies of a few earl ones on vinyl), and it was a gift from a high school friend. He had reviewed it for our school newspaper, and the editor had lost the liner notes when she made the picture for the paper. My friend was so pissed of, he went out and bought a new copy for himself and gave me the old copy without liners. He did me one better though. He hand drew the pictures from the front and back of the liner notes on an index card, and I still have the artwork in my copy. I love Neil's work. I can't wait to hear the new album. So many great albums it's hard to start but undeniably on the beach has to be mentioned (as it already has been) I have an acoustic version of change your mind that is about 15 minutes long and is so fucking cool i've been listening to it a lot lately. |

What makes Neil so fucking incredible to me, though, isn't individual albums. It's his approach to his entire career. It's varied, scarred, miscued, and willfully spastic. The man is incredible. I wish Pearl Jam had taken that lesson away with them, and around 1994-96 I thought maybe they had.

The inability to sing often makes for some very passionate sounding vocals, especially when the singer is struggling to hit notes outside of his range. Neil has done this often in his music. Love In Mind and The Bridge from TFA are excellent examples. It's also what draws me to the vocal sounds of J Mascis and Greg Dulli among others. Even Cobain added emotion to his music by his narrow vocal range. |

In the greatest interview ever conducted (Byrne interviews Byrne), David Byrne once said that he found his lack of vocal talent a blessing, because when someone is a great singer it doesn't feel quite as honest or as believable. Consider Downtown Train. This:

This: vs. this: I agree with this, especially in the cases of people like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy, etc. I think that it wouldnt fit at all if they had a very proficient vocalist. |

El Doradoe is hard to find but any fan of Neil's must find this album. It is one of the hardest rocking ep's ever. Does anyone have a distortion that sounds like his. no This ep, if you are lucky enough to find it will blow your head off. Most of Neil's best songs are acoustic but he really goes all out and huge when it comes to electric. I woulda have loved to seen him in this stage of his career. '89. I mean check out that Sat. Neil has said in an interview that Eldorado is OK to copy since it was only released in limited numbers in Japan and Australia. It is definitely his most hard rocking era, the "Restless/Lost Dogs" era. In 1989, Neil was set to release a hard rock album called "Times Square". Acetates were pressed and everything. For some reason, it was cancelled at the last minute, and the result was the Eldorado EP, and a completely new direction for the album which became Freedom. This was the original tracklisting: Eldorado (later released on the EP and Freedom) Someday (released on Freedom) Sixty to Zero (aka Crime in the City, released on Freedom) Boxcar (unreleased) Don't Cry (released on EP and a slightly edited version on Freedom) Heavy Love (released on EP) Wrecking Ball (released on Freedom) Cocaine Eyes (released on EP) On Broadway (released on EP and Freedom) |

I'd love to torrent it, except for two things. I don't have my own tracker, and even though Neil has said in interviews years ago that it's cool to copy, it might be hard to convince someone with a tracker to allow an official release, even one OOP and rare like this. Second, I can't make EAC work on my computer in its current configuration so I can't make a (guaranteed) perfect copy. |
