I hate them and almost refuse to buy them. In my opinion, no one should ever release just a greatest hits album. The sad thing is greatest hits is almost all my parents buy. It's a sad day. :( I know you all agree.

They aren't all bad. One of the first albums i ever bought was The Doors greatest hits and it basically introduced me to classic rock. Without that album I might still be listening to just rap

some bands' albums just aren't that consistent and they are really suited to greatest hits albums (like aerosmith, cream and scorpions)

There are some very good greatest hits albums, for example...

Queen: The Platinum Collection
The Essential Clash
Nirvana
Alice In Chains: Nothing Safe

And Led Zeppelin has a lot of good ones too, but they have too many classics, they're always missing those one or two extra that will push it into the perfect Zepp compilation.

I'm usually against Greatest Hits albums, but the two-disc anthology of the Ramones is basically all you need to hear from them. :)

for some bands it's good to get but for others it's not. it's all depends on the band.

It's ok in some instances, but most of the time it does kinda bother me... usually only if I care enough about the band to care.... eg. pj

Unless you're a brand new fan, then it's cool to have a scope of a band within 1 or 2 discs.

A truth:

Greatest Hits albums for musicians still working = cash grab during downtime.

However, I don't mind GH compilations for musicians no longer making music: they are a good way to introduce people to the music.

My mistake with buying Greatest Hits albums... I never buy the actual albums.

I have the Smashing Pumpkins greatest hits and the Who ultimate collection. But none of their CDs. Same with Alice in Chains.
