This is one of the songs that kick started the trip-hop phenomena during the early 90s. Massive Attack were one of the frontrunners along with acts like Portishead and Tricky. It was issued as a single in 1991, and was the groups first big hit. The video was also revolutionary. We follow guest singer Shara Nelson along the streets of LA while she sings the songs and ignores everything else surrounding her, and it was all shot in one take. This style was later copied by The Verve who copied the concept for their Bitter sweet Symphony video.

The song is mostly instrumental, with some light chanting and a lyrical set repeated throughout the track. It's atmospheric and quite tense, which sprung from tension within the group according to Robert Del Naja. I really love the percussion in the song, like some sticks tapping out a rhythm. A true classic from the early 90s.

Weird fact: This song has been covered by Tina Turner.

know that I've been mad in love before
And how it could be with you
Really hurt me baby, really hurt me baby
How can you have a day without a night
You're the book that I have opened
And now I've got to know much more

The curiousness of your potential kiss
Has got my mind and body aching
Really hurt me baby, really hurt me baby
How can you have a day without a night
You're the book that I have opened
And now I've got to know much more

Like a soul without a mind
In a body without a heart
I'm missing every part

How big are Massive Attack in the states? Cause Blue Lines & Mezzanine always feature in top-100 best albums ever over here. And Unfinished Sympathy is always around 30-40 in the top-100 best songs, vote by all of alternative Flanders. and they headline every festival they play at.

Looks like it. I thought this song was well known in the US as well, but I guess I was wrong.

I know Massive Attack. Plus, who doesn't know the theme to House? That's Massive Attack. Although I knew of them before that.
