Also, if you're really liking JD and want to know more about them, you can read Touching From a Distance, written by Deborah Curtis (married to Ian). It's very interesting and you learn a lot more about Ian and everything.

Didn't he hang himself cause he broke up with his wife? What's this all about?

No. He hung himself(presumably) because the seizures he experienced were unbearable. He seemed deeply depressed, as well. I'm sure that many Joy Division songs were inspired by the turmoil between him and his wife, though.

Oh, okay. I've been singing their praises since like, January, though.

Not that I give a fuck, though, since anyone who remembers me from the old RM surely remembers that I am a Joy Division fanatic, and that I always have been.

Atmosphere sounds like it inspired a whole lot of U2 songs.

Yeah I suppose, but moreso Bad.

"Let it go/and find a waaaaaay" as two chords fade out is a lot like
"Don't walk away/in silence" as two chords fade out.

What's the deal with Substance? Is it just a collection of singles?
It's a some B-sides too. Except for She's Lost Control, you won't find any of these songs on the two albums, and even that is a different version on this one. The songs are all good to exelent, you can hear the band starting with punk and turning into post-punk, and the whole ting is a good listen. If you like Joy Division, I think it's worth buying, or stealing it.

there's a compilation cd available somewhere called 'sweetheart' that has a bunch of different artists doing their favorite 'love songs', and calexico does 'love will tear us apart'. it's pretty cool, especially hearing it from a stripped down, acoustic approach. there's also a pete townshend cover ('let my love open the door' by m. ward) and a bob dylan one as well ('buckets of rain' by neko case), which is probably my fav. back to the thread, i have a unknown pleasures, so i guess i should check out closer next. any advice after that is welcome, besides maybe the substance compilation, which i used to own but was stolen.
