I value this VHS a lot, so I need a PROMISE it'll be returned. Mine's Aussie, (yep, it was released there), so it is PAL.

I will def buy a copy. I just watched about a minute of that Youtube clip and the sound quality seems really good.

Barrett Martin would have been pretty awesome in Pearl Jam I bet.

Yeah, it is probably his turn next if Matt leaves.

New Mad Season album to feature Mark Lanegan

Barret Martin let loose a few details about the upcoming Mad Season record during a Q&A with Jet City Stream’s Marco Collins Sunday night. Martin was on had at Capitol Hill Block Party to perform with his new band Walking Papers (which also features former Guns N Roses bassist Duff McKagan on record) — see video of Walking Paper’s set here — and when asked about his current projects Martin talked about Mad Season.

He said the upcoming release will include songs with Martin’s former Trees bandmate Mark Lanegan filling in on vocal duties in place of the late Layne Staley. He didn’t say how many songs will feature Lanegan and didn’t address a release date for the record. He did say the songs Lanegan lends his voice to were originally written for Staley.

Mad Season, a band that has been disbanded for more than 15 years, has been in the news quite a bit recently. In April Mike McCready, the band’s only other surviving member, announced the news of a new Mad Season album and the issuing of a Mad Season box set and in May Martin made a surprise guest performance on stage with McCready to play “River of Deceit” during a concert at the Showbox. It was the first time the two of them had performed together in more than 17 years. The video of that performance is embedded above.

Cautiously curious.

Mad Season is one of those projects that should probably be a one and done.

Yeah, I'm rather dubious about this.

Every so often an album comes around that's not just an album by a band but is the result of a project that was very much part of a very specific moment in time. Mad Season is an album like that. I'm not trying to build up some grand aura around it, it's just not something you can recreate. Especially without Layne. It's not a real band doing an album, it's a project that's the result of not just the people that got together but the circumstances that brought them there. Hopefully that makes sense.

The Postal Service (for reasons under very different circumstances) is another example of that type of album. It's a moment in time, you can't just do it again on demand.

Wasn't that second album one of those "pretty much finished but never got released" things?
I'm a little cautious as well. Above is pretty special.

I'm not even a huge fan of the original Mad Season album (it's okay and has some nice moments, I guess) but I do tend to agree with chud that it was a product intrinsically tied to those four musicians at that particular time.

The guitarist and drummer getting together with a bunch of other dudes to work on new tunes might be interesting (potentially), but it isn't really "Mad Season" when two of the original members are dead.

(Then again, I don't think that band that's playing now is "Alice in Chains", so.)

I hope they find a better bassist than wannabe lead guitarist Duff.

I look forward to hearing more Mike tracks from that period in time.
I'd much rather hear that than Turning Mist.

I understand it will not be the same as with Layne but after 15 years i'm able to seperate the two. Been wanting to hear these songs for over a decade now. Now we'll be able to!

Yeah, I wonder why you'd want to necessarily ressurect the 'Mad Season' name rather than just be that group of particular artists getting together to see what they come up with.

Most of the material was written for a second album...

Honestly, I don´t really care about the name, i think its great those guys are playing and making music.
