So I bought "Machine Head" on a whim today, and it turns out that it is a fucking amazing album. I dig the organ, and Blackmore is just solid on the guitar. The jamming on this album is so excellent. It was not at all what I expected it to be, and I love it to death. Anyone else?

Please don't mention "Smoke On The Water". In spite of the fact its basically the reason I bought this, it is also one of the weakest songs on the album

Great fucking album! All of the songs are stellar. I was surprised when I bought this album as well, I didn't expect to like every song. The only other stuff I've heard from Deep Purple is the song Hush, and I enjoy it as well.

Machine Head is indeed an excellent album.

Gov't Mule also did a killer cover of Maybe I'm A Leo.

I'm bumping this thread because I heard Shades of Deep Purple yesterday and I thought it was great. It had that great 60's rock feeling. Any thoughts on this debut?

I love this band. check http://www.thehighwaystar.com

Especially Hush, Child In Time and Burn.

Some of the worst lyrics ever though. But the musicianship is superb.

Black Night
(Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice)

Black night is not right,
I don't feel so bright,
I don't care to sit tight.
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
that I'm free, free to be me.
Black night is a long way from home.

I don't need a dark tree,
I don't want a rough sea,
I can't feel, I can't see.
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
that I'm free, free to be me.
Black night is a long way from home.

Black night, black night,
I don't need black night,
I can't see dark night.
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
that I'm free, free to be me.
Black night is a long way from home

Child in Time
(Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice)

Sweet child in time you'll see the line
The line that's drawn between the good and the bad
See the blind man shooting at the world
Bullets flying taking toll
If you've been bad, Lord I bet you have
And you've not been hit by flying lead
You'd better close your eyes and bow your head
And wait for the ricochet

'Who Do We Think We Are' and 'Perfect Strangers' are great as well. Classic line up (Mark IV I believe) 'Fireball' should be thrown in as well.

When Deep Purple broke up for the 100th time Whitesnake was born. Coverdale, Paice, Lord, & Glover. Early Whitesnake is great.

Ian Paice is in my top 10 list of greatest drummers of all time.
Being able to play Fireball on the drums used to be the ultimate test of a drummers ability.
