So I downloaded some KC boxset with like 14 albums in it. From all their periods I guess, but anyway, what should I start listening to first?

their first stuff is horribly overrated. they started getting really good with their whetton-bruford lineup, of which red is the best album. my personal favorite its the 80s lineup with belew and levin, of which discipline is the best album.

Oh yeah I forgot Tony Levin was in the band. I love his stuff from Liquid Tension Experiment.

I'd go for Red, then ItCotKC, then Discipline. That'll give you a good overview of the different lineups and styles, so you can decide for yourself which one you like best. Also, if you have an extra 60 bucks, The Great Deciever is a kickass (4 cd) live album.

As in, are they still in print? And what about the matter of re-issues and remastering and what-nots...which should i get?

Anyway, i'm gonna DL some tracks from those albums mentioned above. Anyone have recommendations for any particuliar track?

20th Century Schizoid Man is their most famous track, and it's pretty good, but not nearly the best. KC is a consistant enough group that most anything you can find will be good.

And yes, everyhting they've done is still in print, I believe. If you can't find it on Amazon or somwhere like that, try this link:
http://www.disciplineglobalmobile.com/order/

P.S. - If anyone is thinking of ordering The Great Deciever, DO NOT get it from amazon, which has it listed as oop and has 3rd parties selling it for $130. You can still get it from the above link for $70 or so.

Did a search on amazon. Court seem to have 2 versions. a "remastered" one that was release early last year and a 30 anniv edition. Anyone know whats the deal (difference) with these 2 editions? :?

Slightly off-topic I know, but I was reading an otherwise risible Stephen King book Insomnia the other day and there was a character in it called the Crimson King; must be related to the band name, surely?

Get the 30th Anniversary disc, it was overseen by Fripp (guitarist/songwriter) himself. The original cd version is actually not that bad, but I'd still go with the version the band approves.

In the Court of the Crimson King [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]

# Audio CD (February 22, 2005)
# Format: Original recording remastered
# Label: Discipline Us

"I'm going to briefly jump into the sound before talking about the music-- if you're not interested, skip to the next paragraph. Fripp has remastered the album for what seems like the millionth time-- this time from the original session tapes. The result is stunning-- there's a clarity here not present on previous editions, the production seems to have slightly changed, Lake often sounds like he's singing right in your ear, the vocal harmonies, always for me one of the things that separated this album from similar acheivements (the stunning playing of Fripp and Giles being the other) are clear and distinct. And for an album of dynamic, it has long gone without any clear hearing-- "Moonchild", which often sounded like unfocused tinkling, finally sounds coherent on record. From a sonic standpoint, this is finally the treatment the record deserves."

In The Court Of The Crimson King: 30th Anniversary Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]

# Audio CD (September 14, 1999)
# Number of Discs: 1
# Format: Original recording remastered
# Label: Caroline

"Embracing rock and jazz and classical, King Crimson's debut is rightly considered groundbreaking and arguably the most notable album in the genesis of progressive rock. While the proto-prog artists like Procol Harum and The Moody Blues (whose _Days of Future Passed_ was feasibly the first prog rock album, really), were influential as well, _In the Court of the Crimson King_ was more overpowering and momentous. Why? I'd say the first song, "21st Century Schizoid Man", likely left a big impression, blowing the mind of everyone who heard it. An explosive marriage of bombastic rock and fiery jazz, with a middle section of searing tempos and rhythmic virtuosity -- drummer Michael Giles' precision and power stand out while Greg Lake (on bass) hammers out his most intense performance ever. The overlaying horns keep a quirky flavor intact (amusing, as the lyrics are quite bleak). Robert Fripp's solo is aggressive and spits off a diatonic scale with a hectic texturizing quality. In the end, it all collapses into a noisy mire that seems in sync with the song's overall theme."

So i should get the one pressed in 1999 ?

Hmmm, I had thought the 30th Ann. edition was the only one overseen by Fripp. In that case, I guess I'd go with the later version. I googled it and couldn't find anyone critical of either version of the cd, so you're pretty safe either way.

Definitely get the recently remastered edition of Court of the Crimson King. With the other remasters it's not going to matter too much since they didn't seem to spend as much time on them.
