so, i was on my way to a friends house who was having a large shin-dig which i was invited to.
well, i bought Broken Social Scene's 'you forgot it in people' (yes, yes, i know, im many years behind) yesterday because its so talked about and i had yet to hear it. i realized im very much behind the times with this band, so i better catch up while they're still going. so i got in my car, turned on my engine, sipped my iced green tea, popped the album in and i was on my way.
and for the one hundred and twelve minutes i had an out of body experiance. i drove past my friends house halfway through 'looks just like the sun' and thoght to myself "fuck this, i have too much of a good thing going on right now to get out and socialize with people"...
so i kept going. i listened to the whole album twice just driving. it was really amazing, one of the better nights ive had in an enormous amount of time. i swear to god, it was like i was on shrooms or something, tearing up at just how goddamn amazing every song was. a piece of music has never had such a strong impact on me with the first listen like this one had.
p.s. i finally made it to the party. it was really fun, i mostly talked about music with some pretty "trendy" folks (having to defend certain bands i love that are considered 'mainstream')...plus there was free beer.

When I got home to Austin a couple weeks ago after a drive by myself from North Carolina, You Forgot It In People was the CD that was in my player at the end of the drive. I took all my other CDs inside so I ended up listening to that for like 2 days straight.
It is a fucking incredible album. I rank it in the top 5 indie albums from the past 5 years. Almost Crimes is like the defining moment in actual indie rock for me. Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl and Cause = Time equals Untitled and Obstacle 1 (Interpol) in strength and that is one of my favorite 1-2 sequences ever. You're Still My Fag, though the name is pretty disturbing, is an incredible song too, be it short. The whole album is so diverse, never gets boring, even the relaxed duo in between Almost Crimes and Anthems... has been growing on me the more I listen to.
I think the album will end up getting around a 9.3 when I get around to finalizing my indie ratings, about the same as Arcade Fire and pretty much fucking outstanding all the way around.

They have a very diverse sound. I'm not sure exactly how many band members there were when they recorded You Forgot It In People, but now they have more than 10 I believe so there are many different instruments involved. They range from light groovy jazz, to almost a sort of reggae I guess, to pure string arrangements. To me, the best songs are when they kick it into high gear and rock it out, with an incredible rhythm section and roaring guitars, and the singer really exhibits very good range and diversity with his styles, but his wailing works extremely well. I think groovy may be the best word to describe the band, a lot of this due to thier bass player I believe, but at least 5 songs make you just want to jump up and dance or sing along.
I have a pretty hard time likening thier music to another band, mostly because every song of thiers sounds different. Neither of these are really a good depiction of BSS sound, but I'll go ahead and say they sound like a cross between The Microphones and Sonic Youth.

I saw these guys twice in October. Fucking incredible live act. They've got 2 drummers, 5 guitarists, a sick bass player, and horns/strings and piano/organs------ all being played at the same freakin time. You end up wondering how the hell they can play that many instruments at once, and still sound awesome.
At the second show, J Mascis joined them to play 'Almost Crimes', and it was awesome. Definately the highlight of the two shows.
I like YFIIP, and it has my fav BSS songs (Cause=Time & Almost crimes), but I think the self titled album is the better album.

It's different. I wouldn't even know how to describe it. Just great music.
