Anyone here listen to these guys? They do a lot of funky and cool covers.

I like the approach they take with a lot of their covers, but I find the chick's deadpan staring into the camera very irritating.

They've got a Christmas commercial going on right now and I've often thought the same things as Jorge. Her stage presence is everything that I didn't like about the whole "quirky" movement that occurred in indie culture roughly between the year of the release of Rushmore and the year that Leslie Fiest song was used in that one commercial. By the time 500 Days of Summer rolled around, things were getting to be silly. This one is just too much.

good voice though.

This is a Christmas song of theirs. It is an original but it sounds like an old jazz standard. I really like it.

Man, I don't trust any of those people to be sincere about anything. Just look at them, Jorge.

It's the Natalie Portman in Garden State effect.

That's exactly what it is. It was good in moderation, but it snowballed real fast. I'm interested in why it happened with such success. Any theories? I have a few, but they aren't very fleshed out.

I've never judged the music itself by the stage presence of the artist. I mean, Tom Petty makes out with his microphone and I can't stand it but he's still one of my favorite artists. *shrugs*

None really. Garden State really spearheaded this movement for girls to think, hey, if I pretend to be quirky and goofy, nice guys will like me and think I'm special. Not sure why it happened, though. Backlash against riot grrl/new way of empowerment for women?

Yes but a big reason these guys got popular is their quirky VideoSongs, and the girl's deadpan mug gazing lifeless and medicated at the viewer.

It's alright. I like their arrangements. It's just their videos seem a little precious. For what it's worth, they seem like really fun people and they're talented, so. Big bucket of win for them.
