I guess I should elaborate a bit...I feel bad otherwise.
I can only speak for myself, but I think the soundtrack to The Two Towers was the best of them...but that's mainly because I loved the Rohan-themed strings.

They're all good, though.
Is it true a lot of it sounds samey ?
Hmm...I guess you could say it's a little like that, but I don't think it's bad. Maybe you should get them used...or just buy the one you think you'd like the most.
...Of course, I'm sure you've already thought of that.

I find the Two Towers one to be the very enjoyable, because of the aforementioned Rohan strings and the Evenstar theme.
Return of the King was my least favorite. I only liked the Minas Tirith and Into the West tracks on that one.
But my favorite is the Fellowship of the Ring. Fave tracks are: Concerning Hobbits, The Bridge of Khazad-Dum, The Ring Goes South, The Breaking of the Fellowship, and May It Be.
There's a boxed set of these floating around, though if you're new to these, I'd start with Fellowship and work your way through. I'd buy 'em used too, if you can. If you can find the limited editions for FOTR and ROTK, lemme know. I need those. And the TTT one, which I have, usually fetches a pretty good penny on ebay.

ive only heard the return of the king one and its enjoyable. im usually not a fan of movie soundtracks so this is a first for me. perhaps because everything about these movies was so good the soundtrack has no choice but to be good
