i'm currently in a post-rock phase... in the last two hours i've been listeneing to mogwai's latest, GYBE's slow riot and right now i'm on my straight second spin of EITS's those who tell the truth... i'm having a hell of a great time
sigur ros is a long-time favourite and i'm slowly getting into the afore-mentionned bands... i love all the emotions this type of music conveys... great stuff...
and let's not forget slint and later-day talk talk... spiderland and laughing stock are two masterpieces....

8 years ago you couldn't say post-rock without conjuring images of Tortoise. Now post-rock is GYBE, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, and EITS. That is kind of bullshit. Post-rock is by far my favorite sub-genre of "indie", but there is so much more than the big 4. Granted, Mogwai is like my favorite indie band ever, but they aren't the entire genre.
Tortoise, Labradford, Stars of the Lid, Do Make Say Think, Mercury Program, To Rococo Rot, Windsor for the Derby, Rome, Aix Em Klemm, Experimental Audio Research, Amp, Fuxa, Jim O'Rourke, these are all the post-rock/electronic guys, and I immensely enjoy all of these artists. Most of it is really chilled out, often jazzy, ambient type music. They all pretty much use electronic and orchestral instrumentations as often if not more often than normal rock instrumentation, like guitars and basses.
Then you have the Slint imitator bands, who I guess were kind of classified as noise-rock or math-rock as well as post-rock. For the most part, I don't care for these artists as much, though Slint, June of 44, Rodan, Oma Yang, The For Carnation, etc are pretty damn good. There are a shitton of wierdo Slint clone bands from the early to mid 90s that are pretty boring, though.
Then you have my favorite subcategory type thing of post-rock, the Mogwai style. I don't really know what to call it, but I kind of just classify them in my head as the instrumental or experimental rock groups. Mostly they use guitars as their primary instrument. Aside from the obvious Mogwai and EITS, there are some really good bands like this that are unheard of. Mono, Oma Yang, Quickspace, Surface of Eceyon, Yume Bitsu, Tristeza, Sonna, Tarentel, Southpacific, Lanterna, Six Parts Seven, Windy and Carl, Jessamine, Flying Saucer Attack, Character, really there are a lot more and the list could go on forever. Almost none of these bands use lyrics predominantly and they all use lots of guitar, bringing about Mogwai comparisons which hold some truth, but it's really a very diverse group.
Then you have some of my absolute favorite bands, ones that pretty much defy classification. Cul de Sac, Gastr del Sol, GYBE, Spiritualized, Sigur Ros and Stereolab are all over the map in terms of style, but they are all considered at least partly post-rock. All those artists make breathtaking, amazing, complex music, to make the understatement of the century.
The Album Leaf may be my favorite "post-rock" band of the moment. Jimmy Lavalle is a genius in my mind especially considering that he used to be in the Locust who are a mind fuck of a band.
The Burning Paris' new album is great, but i kind of forget that it's on whenever it's playing.
Sigur Ros make me want to quit playing music because nothing I do will ever be as good as what they do.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor's songs are by far the most well orchestrated, but they tend to go on for a little to long IMO
Explosions in the Sky took what Godspeed did and shortened the songs a bit which I think is fantastic.
Isis have one of the loudest live shows of any band ever.
Neurosis when played with the Tribes of Neurot soundscapes will make you think diffrently about what good music is.
Pelican is overated yet still very very good.
Mogwai always sounded more like a shoegaze band to me than a "post-rock" band. I have all their albums and will continue to buy whatever they release, but their songs dont move as well as Godspeed's or EITS's do. Apparently the new album is amazing so my opinon on them may change soon.
Tortise are extremly underrated.
Tristiza will never be exposed since Jimmy Lavalle left the group. With his loss they also lost the creativity of the group.
Mono are Japanese
Shiner's album "The Egg" is post rock with emphais on th rock.

If 65daysofstatic count, then they're the best, in my opinion. Radio Protector is the song that got me into them recently, and it's still a favourite.
I'm more interested in the electronica or rocky sounding bands from this genre, so Isis, Pelican, ...Trail Of Dead and 65daysofstatic or the big ones for me. Like Godspeed You! Black Emperor as well, if they count. To be honest, I'm a little confused about the exact labelling.
Not so much of a fan of Wilco, they seem overrated but anyone who wants to change my mind is welcome to try. And I've not really heard much Explosions In The Sky but I see people here rave about them- does anyone have much recommendation for a starting point?
