Very impressed by Bono's voice. It seems much stronger than 4 years ago.

First time I'd heard "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own." Excellent track.

Wow, nice surprise at the end of the show with "I Will Follow." That's the first time I remember a show ending like that.

They were about to play a fourth song. It was "All Because of You".

sorry for the double post. The search function must not be working because I absolutely searched for U2 SNL before I posted that.

and how about the "she loves you yeah yeah yeah" tagline at the end of vertigo??

Little late on this, but they rocked SNL like very very few bands have before.

"I will follow" at the end, going into the crowd - that is why many consider U2 the best band around today, and while PJ is still the shit, very few know how to command a room, arena, stadium like Bono & co. I had chills (which says a lot for an SNL performance).

BTW, anyone near Brooklyn right now need their U2 fix? Go out your doors and listen for them (as I tried to quietly warn everyone about last week)

I'm not sure what to make of U2 anymore. Are they sell-outs or what? a U2 ipod? I remember a very long time ago (during Joshua Tree era) Bono making a remark "we don't need the pop kids to buy our albums" or something to that effect (that they don't want to be though of as Pop) and look at them now, they are everywhere you look, ipod ads, SNL, driving on a flatbed through NYC filming a music video... If this isn't to appeal to the Pop crowd then what is it?

Basically doing everything PJ would NEVER do re-inforcing why I like PJ so much.

Anyone with me on this?

Or you could view it as them adopting new technology or perhaps they've changed their opinions on "pop kids" since 1987.

U2 wants to be a big rock band, Pearl Jam doesn't. Nothing wrong with that.

I'm thinking the Pop album and the PopMart tour pretty much blew all expectations of what they were or if they sold out out of the water.

Here's a good article where Paul McGuinness explains there approach to every new release.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... usic_u2_dc

Very few bands IMO have the chops to back up the kind of promotional flood that results from a new album. U2 at least does it in a cool way (small, surprise gigs). To me, driving down the New York streets playing on a flatbed, while not original (see The Stones circa 1972) is still pretty bad-ass.

They rarely disappoint musically and can still put on live shows to rival anyone else on the planet, so I don't care if Bono is shilling for Palmolive, Viagra, or anything else.

I have allowed every single indescretion U2 have ever made to not bother me
except the ipod ad, which really upset me for reasons... anyway...
i still love them despite this type of stuff.
but i could never feel the way about u2 that i feel about pj.

this isn't really that new for u2. basically the same thing as the where the streets have no name video, only on a truck rather than a roof.

That was one of the best SNL performances ever. Hands fucking down. U2 proved why they are one of the best rock bands in history, and Bono certainly cemented his place as one of the best frontmen ever. Amazing band. Can't wait for the tour.

I hate to admit this... but at the end when he went over with the cast and was singing while holding Amy Poehler and she was crying and other cast members were crying, I started to get a little teary myself. heh

I love when people get overwhelmed with live music like that, so I felt I had to do my part too.
