I like D&G, but other than the sound quality issues and choppy editing, I think Big Time is a lot better. That band was just so rich in sound and textures, the arrangements were great and Tom's voice was so much better then.

I suspect my overall opinion of Glitter and Doom is probably a little colored by how much I love "I'll Shoot the Moon."

I greatly prefer G+D, although the high spots on Big time are probably better

Steve Vai talks about his favorite records...

Mule Variations

Quote:
There’s a funny story here. When I was with David Lee Roth he would always talk about Tom Waits in a very respectful way, which was rare. I never heard Dave speak reverently about anybody, and I didn’t even know who Tom Waits was. I had never come across his music. But all through the years, Dave would always say, ‘Yeah, like Tom Waits’ and I’d just say ‘Yeah, yeah!’ And then I was on tour with Whitesnake and there was this band opening up called Bad English whose singer was a guy called John Waite and I thought “Wow, this was what Dave was talking about? Hmm, it’s kind of strange because it’s not the kind of singer that Dave would be reverent about.” And then I realized I had the wrong guy… So I went to the store and bought about twenty Tom Waits albums and (one of them was Mule Variations), and I remember that I was listening to all these records, getting three tracks in and literally throwing them away. Then I put Mule Variations on and stopped dead in my tracks. It completely leveled me and I can say – out of everybody I’ve talked about – Tom Waits is my favorite artist now. I completely resonate deeply with his music, his voice and his lyrics; I buy everything he ever does. He’s one of those guys who are totally at one with the creative element with no excuses or concerns about what’s going on around him – totally uncompromising.A lot of people think they’re uncompromising, but they’re not…

it kind of annoys me that all these cryptic lines are better than the lyrics on so much of Bad as Me.

I'd love for this to be about a new record, not only for the material or his age but because of the way having a great new record might make it easier for me to appreciate Bad As Me for what it is.

It's always tougher to love 'decent' when 'decent' is also 'the new one.'

So...the big announcement is...a new music video?

http://www.tomwaits.com/

I feel like I'm missing something.

Youtube commenters are real crestfallen. Anti didn't handle this very well. But hey, I like the music video.

I'll admit that a small part of me is relieved that I won't have to feel bad about not being able to afford tickets.

Absolutely. I certainly would have emotionally purchased tickets to a far away land where travel would double the cost of the already expensive concert ticket.

at least i've already seen him. Otherwise id be pissed about this announcement.

oh man what a great video

Also I'm in KD's position with the tickets, so just as well for me. Still never seen him, though.

My little brother compared this to "be sure to drink your Ovaltine."

haha. I don't know why, but I'm not really let down either. A tour would've been sweet, but I always thought there was a slim chance of that, I s'pose.
