whenever i come back home from a night of heavy drinking, there is one album in the world that i can listen to. that album is nighthawks at the dinner. the greatest drunk album ever.
and jockey full of bourbon from RD is just about the coolsest song ever

Rain Dogs may be his best, but if you want to really trip out...start at the beginning, and progress.
Just be aware that the early records (the first two especially) have a very different feel. There is a real break with swordfishtrombones.
Rain Dogs, Blood Money, Heart of saturday night, closing time, bone machine, heart attack and vine, blue valentines, and mule variations are the best. You can't go wrong with any of them. You'll get more sheer variety of styles on Rain Dogs and Mule Variations though.
Rain Dogs is pretty universally considered his masterpiece
bloody money and blue valentine are ok but not some of his best. substitute them for small change and alice and that's a pretty definitive list (though my all time favorite will always be nighthawks, i have to concede that for whatever messed up reason people don't seem to enjoy it that much)
Any album with romeo is bleeding on it is awesome
I could never really get into alice, wheras blood money is one awesome song after another. Some of his best song titles ever too

its weird because i liked blood money a lot more than alice for about the first year after they came out. it hit me right away and i loved it. eventually though almost song by song the ones on alice really started to open up and grow on me tremendously. now blood money just seems more like standard cookie monster voice waits that doesn't have the compelling beauty, strange as it is, that alice has. either way him releasing two awesome albums the same day was one of the coolest things ever.

I love Cookie Monster Tom.
But except for the part you throw away I agree that there is more beauty to Alice. it's just that the cookie monster songs are sooooooo f'ing good.

I got to see Tom Waits live in Oakland back in 96.
It was such a great show. He played alot of stuff off of Bone Machine, which was so cool. Seeing Goin out West, Earth Died Screaming, Jesus gonna be here, In the colosseum, etc. live was unbelievable.
The two show stoppers were Innocent When you Dream and Time. He sang a few more songs in an encore after Time - but the show really peaked there. You could hear a pin drop in the theatre even though the place was sold out. It was very moving.
And the stories he told were hilarious. There was an especially funny one about having dinner at the 7-11 around the corner before the show.

I saw him in Seattle at the end of '04. Easily one of the top 5 shows I have ever seen. His voice is incredible live - really powerful and captivating. His band was perfectly suited for him - tight and weird.

that's a good one. I think it gets lost in the mix sometimes with Time and Downtown train.
