I have a question, I bought 'Real Gone' on my lunch break at work today, and when I came back people were asking me what I bought. Naturally nobody had even heard of him, and they asked me what or who he sounds like. I really couldnt answer the question. So, when people ask you about Tom Waits, what do you usually tell them?

I guarantee you never have and never will hear anything else like him.

Or, if they want specifics...

Yeah, that thread creeped me out. ;)

Thats what I tried to tell them. That he sounds like nothing else Ive ever heard. They kept asking me broad questions like, "well is there guitar? alot of percussion? piano? soft? fast?" I answered....Yes. ;)

I did say his voice sometimes sounds like the Cookie Monster :D

I don't know where the hell they are, but I have so damn many Tom boots that I don't expect to find anything new.

And even by Tom Waits standards, Real Gone is out there. It's like a twisted, axe-murdering, and mildly satirical take on hip-hop. I wouldn't rate it among his best albums, but it's certainly an interesting (and hopefully brief) departure from his previous work -- which itself cannot really be described as following a consistent path.

Tom is easily the most uncategorizable artist in popular music history. There is quite simply, no one else like him. And he rules. 8)

I'm not crazy for the album Real Gone as a whole (my favorite Waits are Alice and Bone Machine), but the second song, Hoist that Rag, is pure ecstasy. Literally. It's a little dose of MDMA in a song. No I'm serious.

a day earlier and you could have first listened to it on a saturday night, that's what i did and it was absolutely transcendent and a big reason why i'm such a huge waits fan.
