The Cure are all set for a new mega tour as The Gothfather sets out to undercut the opposition

By John Dingwall

THE Cure rocker Robert Smith has announced he is planning a Curiosa tour in the UK early next year and wants to include Scotland in his plans. The legendary British group - who have survived 25 years together - first took their Lollapalooza-style festival tour to the US earlier this year.

Featuring The Cure and their favourite bands, such as Interpol, on the bill, it was a massive success and now the man fans nicknamed The Gothfather would like to do something similar in the UK.

Insiders say the band have already been in touch with promoters to see if the dates could work in Britain and Scottish dates are among those being considered.

Smith said: 'I'd love to do another Curiosa tour, maybe even next year. I might even do a British version, but with the kind of weather we have here in the early part of the year, it would probably have to be an indoor thing.'

He has hit out at the superstars who charge fans exorbitant fees to see them, saying they are destroying live music.

He continued: 'Curiosa was the best live touring experience of my life so far. It exceeded all my expectations. It was particularly satisfying that we managed to do Curiosa without sponsorship and keep ticket prices low and still make a little money.

'The Sting and Annie Lennox package, for example, was more than $100 a ticket.

'Prices like that are crippling promoters and artists further down the ladder, because when fans spend that much on one ticket, they can't afford to go to see so many other shows.'

News of The Cure's plans to tour next year coincides with the launch of a new version of the classic album which launched the band back in 1979.

Three Imaginary Boys is been re-issued as a double CD deluxe edition having been remastered at Abbey Road with a CD of bonus tracks, memorabilia and unseen photographs.

The Cure's quarter century of albums also includes Seventeen Seconds (1980) which included one of The Cure's greatest ever singles A Forest, Faith (1981), the darker Pornography (1983) and the pop album Japanese Whispers, which includes the singles Lovecats and Let's Go To Bed.

In 1984 came The Top, The Head On The Door (1985), Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987), 1989 gave us Disintegration, Wish in 1992, Wild Mood Swings in 1996, Bloodflowers in 2004 and The Cure in 2004.

Smith explained: 'The Three Imaginary Boys re-issue is actually just the start of a programme of re-issuing all of our back catalogue and it will have the same care and attention lavished on it. Three Imaginary Boys is now exactly as we heard it in the studio when we recorded it.

'It's great to have it sounding like it should again."

Excuse me, but fuck you Robert Smith. I seem to remember paying $60+ a ticket (+ another $10 for Ticketmaster fees) for Curiosa and then getting up to the merchandise booth where you charged $30 for a tee shirt. Get off of your high horse.

I'm just happy at the prospect of another curiosa, hopefully he'll revise it and bring it to the states again next summer. I only payed 25 for my lawn ticket, but I really need to see them live again, I was just getting into the Cure and decided to go spur of the moment and was totally impressed.
