Everything you need to know is here, on the bands official site.

Quote:
the name of the band, sigur rós, is actually the name of jónsi's little sister, except it's spelled sigurrós. she was born at the same time as the band formed. sigur rós translates to 'victory rose'.

As for their albums, their 3 most recent and popular are ágætis byrjun, ( ), and takk. I haven't heard any of their earlier work but i think there is another album or 2.

There's only "Von" before Agaetis Byrjun, but compared to the three albums that followed, it's not even worth checking out IMO.

3 world class albums + world class live act + very nice, down to earth guys = fantastic band.

Edit: sorry, I was overreacting, Von is worth checking out, but just don't expect too much.

I don't think I know any of their music. How would you describe their sound, and is there anyone you can compare them to?

You'd have to hear them to fully understand. Their music is a bit spacey and bleak, but quite nice to listen to. It's not something I listen to everyday though, you kind of have to be in the mood for it. They sing in Icelandic (or gibberish, depending on the album). There really isn't anybody to compare them to.

Definitely check them out though.

I sometimes wonder (and especially when I saw them live) how anyone can not like Sigur Rós.

I'm thinking very seriously of trying to pick up tickets to see them in Austin off of ebay. I don't even care how shitty the seats are.

Basically, Sigur Ros rules. I'll give a shot at describing them.

They play very slow, melodic, spacey rock. Thier music is very dreamy, with MBV-esque waves of bowed guitars, ethereal vocals and slow crescendos into loud and extremely lush climaxes. Due to their very melodic nature, I would be more likely to call them pop than rock, but they play very slowly. Think Air, Mum, or M83 filtered through a giant wall of thick honey.

I get to see them for the first time on Valentine's Day with my wife. It's a surprise for her.

I love Agaetis, nowadays I'm listening to their last album Takk...

I don't know if it would be a mistake to compare them to something. The critic says they are "experimental" and "post rock". You can compare them to some Radiohead maybe... it's not the same sound, of course. But it's similar in the way they deal with sounds that are actually sounds of something you don't know very well. The same happens with the singer's voice: it's like a drunk person singing style haha.

I like them a lot. But I feel it takes time to understand their music and like it. Specially because it's music what you can get and not the lyrics...

You can listen to them, Stip. If you like that kind of music, you'll like them a lot.

Heh, I would love to go, but the tickets are gonna run me a lot.

Actually, the question is, how often do they tour? If it is only once for each album, which is generally every 3 years, I might have to go all out to get tickets so I don't have to wait forever when I miss this one.
