new album in the works

sigur rós have begun recording their new album and expect to finish it later this year. according to georg, it remains to be seen whether the band will be taking a totally new direction on the album. “we have finished recording a few songs but some more things need to be done. we don’t know exactly where the album is heading yet. we are really just experimenting at this stage. some of the songs we recorded are old songs which we had written a while ago, unreleased material which we never got a chance to finish. we decided it was time they were recorded.” georg says there is a possibility the album will be released this year but nothing is confirmed at this point.

Its a soundtrack for movie of the same name. Although the songs are mostly those of a composer guy, Sigur Ros contribute 2 tracks at the end of the album, both of which are very good. The album overall has a mood and tone similar to that of Sigur Ros however, although with more classical instrumentation and very little percussion until the Sigur Ros tracks kick in.

Its well worth hearing though, as the composer who wrote the bulk of the material is obviously a talented guy.

Get the Ný Batterí EP, psychobain. It's where the two Sigur Rós tracks on Angels of the Universe came from, and it's awesome.

Weird, I never knew that they began working on a new album. That news was from January. Have there been any follow up stories?

Anyway, I haven't listened to these dudes in a while. Agaetis is temendous, one of my favorites, () is great, and Takk is... well it's still good, but on the same level as the first two.

I think this next album is going to be kind of tricky. I kind of feel they've exhausted the possibilities of their sound, but how can they go too far beyond that without losing what makes them Sigur Ros? In many ways, I think this next one is going to a kind of make-or-break sort of deal.

psychobain, you can get that EP, but you should download the whole album as well. It is actually labeled as Hilmar Orn Hilmarlsson - Angels of the Universe. I uploaded it in flac on oink if you are interested.

Anyway, if Siggy went back to their () sound, I would be eternally grateful. Takk was ok, but () was insane.

As far as Sigur Rós news goes, here's what I've read lately:

1. A newspaper in Iceland reported (and the mods at SR's mb confirmed) that SR is still editing their concert footage from last year and they're aiming for a premiere in August with the DVD release to follow later in the fall.

2. bjössi recently posted that "the band has recorded and mixed rokklagið, lagið í gær, von new version and salka but these songs will not be included on the next album. instead, they will appear on an EP to be released (tentatively) later this year. the band wants to build the next album on a clean slate instead of mixing together old and new songs.

i think this is going to make a fucking great EP... three of the band's most conventional basic instrument "rock" songs and then the sugarsweet von in between.
"

Good news, all around.

Wow, great news, but I'm not sure what to think about an acoustic Sigur Ros.

And where is the news about the release of a new regular LP?

Neither am I. Should be interesting.

From what I gather, they're still in the very early stages of it.

This thread over on SR's message board provides a little more info on the new stuff.

While the acoustic album will be new (in fact, they haven't even started recording it yet) and contain some new songs, it's not really considered their next proper album.
