I've yet to check out the much heralded middle period of Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream, but the early and later stuff I have is quite good.
They remind me of Rush in that they are more of a purely musical than an emotional force, at times seeming a bit soulless. This is simply more of a defining characteristic than a flaw, though.
Up The Downstair and Signify are kickass headphone albums from the earlier, less vocal/pop driven period. In latter days, the immediate songs of In Absentia serve as a good introduction (it's the one that got me hooked), but I feel Deadwing is a more substantial album overall. "Arriving Somewhere..." is a definitive track for the band.
Also, someone please tell me the new live DVD is good. It must be, the show I caught in September 2005 was very satisfying.

I think the live DVD is extremely good. I'm enjoying it immensely so far...

I'm listening to Signify (2 disc remaster) again right now. That album is a grower. Such cool percussion and rhythm.
Signify is one of my favorite albums whenever I listen to it. It doesn't really stick with you, but it's such an incredible album. Waiting, Sleep Of No Dreaming, Every Home Is Wired, Intermediate Jesus, and Dark Matter just have the coolest mood to them. And then you add Wake As Gun from the bonus disc and the acoustic Nine Cats, and it's really their best era when you think of it, even if it's not their best album.
And Metanoia is cool too, although not nearly as accessible.
