i sat at best buy today for a long while deliberating between pavement's 'crooked rain, crooked rain' reissue (upon stephen's suggestion) and miles' davis's 'bitches brew'. the thread title should serve as an obvious indication which one i chose
what initially attracted me was the little blurb on the back of the album (which would be a nice idea for all albums!)/ '1969', 'protean trumpet', 'improvised' 'fuse jazz and rock', 'churning and contemplative'...all words/phrases that made me want to hear the album right then and there.
i buy it and the drive home allows just enough time for 'pharoah's dance'. i am in love with this album. it's a wonder i haven't discovered it sooner, if not for the echoing trumpets alone. this album is a must have for any fan of music at all, i'm in love.

I love my far out jazz, and I love this set of music with such amazing talent as Miles and John Mclaughlin and Chick Corea et al.
There's some amazing music there, a bunch of guys in a studio developing a whole new form of music. Sanctuary is breathtaking to me.
If you like echoing trumpets, sounds like you're ready for Michael Ray & the Cosmic Krewe. Thats' some far out New Orleans Jazz. He played with Sun Ra and his Arkestra. (and still does) If you ever want to see something amazing, catch the Arkestra live. They don't tour much anymore, but occasionally they play out. There is nothing like it! They were influence on Miles, and he was on them, too, back in the 50's.

I think i might have to pick this up. I've never really listened to any of his stuff but I was reading about it and seems like a cool album.

I love Miles Davis!
Sometime, Reid, you really must turn off all your lights at night and put on Miles Davis. Listen with headphones. Its amazing.
My two favourite Miles Davis songs, "'Round Midnight" and "Blues for Pablo" are not on that album. If you're enjoying Davis, try to find those songs, too.

I personally prefer his early blues-ish stuff.. Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, etc. A lot of his music is good but doesn't quite do it for me, I think I'm just not crazy about the trumpet. People are welcome to their opinions but there are a lot of jazz artists that I would rather listen to.
And since someone brought up Round Midnight, let me just say that Keith Jarrett's version of this song is absolutely gorgeous. Like, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat gorgeous.

Miles Davis was addicted to Heroin (as were all good jazz/blues aficiandos) when he made that album

Miles Davis is really, really good. I have yet to be hit by his music as hard as some, but I do like it. I bought Bitches Brew after finding out that he was a Cream fan, and that Cream was sort of an influence/inspiration for Bitches Brew. Good stuff, but I think I prefer Kind of Blue.

I Think I own everything Miles has ever put out.....My favorites are the Quintet recordings in the 60s....I can talk about miles all day but I'll leave it at that....BTW, Round Midnight is a Monk tune I'm sure you know that though....Miles does do it wonders though...If you really enjoyed Bitches, try Tribute to Jack Johnson..It will blow you away
