Heard a lot about this band and J. Mascis, but never anything about the actual music or what album(s) to start with. Advice?

I'd suggest you start with Where You Been. It's fantastic.

Just because you're too stupid to understand the appeal of early Dinosaur Jr. doesn't mean you should set this kid off in the wrong direction. Get Green Mind and then You're Living All Over Me and Bug when they comes back in print.

What kind of progression is there in the albums?

Their later records are much better; once Lou Barlow was out things improved real fast.

There's absolutely no way that a statement like this is remotely tolerable. I'm not sure how one could ever call someone stupid based on their OPINION. There is no quantifiable fact that is being ignored here, we're talking about art and opinion.

Bumped to post my ten favourite J. Mascis tunes:

Gotta Know
Alone
I'm Not Fine
Turnip Farm
Out There
Start Choppin
What Else Is New
Get Me
Goin' Home
Seemed Like The Thing To Do

Turnip Farm is probably the best non-album track I've ever heard.

Hmm where to start with Dinosaur Jr albums... I'm not sure its like where to start with Pearl Jam albums for me.

I too think Where ya been or Green Mind would be a good album to start with although each album has their gems. I posted this on the old RM board but I'll throw it on here too. If you live on the east coast J is making his way up the coast starting in atlanta for a little pre X-Mas tour. Just be prepared for LOUD guitar. He is great live and is usually hanging out before the shows really cool guy. Here are the dates you could maybe check them out.

Sat 11/6/04 Long Beach, CA ATP Festival

Wed 11/10/04 Atlanta, GA Smith's Olde Bar

Thu 11/11/04 Knoxville, TN Blue Cats

Fri 11/12/04 Charlotte, NC Amos' Southend

Sat 11/13/04 Raleigh, NC Lincoln Theatre

Sun 11/14/04 Baltimore, MD Funk Box

Mon 11/15/04 Morgantown, WV 123 Pleasant Street

Tue 11/16/04 Washington, DC Black Cat

Wed 11/17/04 Philadelphia, PA North Star

Thu 11/18/04 Hoboken, NJ Maxwell's

Fri 11/10/04 Brooklyn, NYC North Six

Sat 11/20/04 Cambridge, MA Middle East Club

I started with Green Mind, very good record to start with IMO.

Even though D Jr. has some great record I'ld prefer Lou Barlow over J Mascis any second! Loobie Core!!!!

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Why is everyone suddenly playing the North Six? It's in the worst part of Brooklyn, and age-restricted.

I finally burned 'Without a Sound' for something new to listen to, and it's a perfect album. I really dig it.

re: Dinosaur Jr., I suggest starting in 1990-1991 and work your way forward.

And I would start with Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock re: Sebadoh

Then perhaps check out "Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse" (Skinny Puppy).

Gawd to be young again - I wish it were 1991-1992.....

Well it's only you that's getting bent out of shape over a comment that was made jokingly, but whatever. I've noticed how you like to flex those mod muscles and try to rid people of their entertaining quirks, and I just don't understand that at all. Obviously people who are interesting and have a sense of humour can't thrive on this board, so maybe I should just leave now and make room for the drones who'll make this place perfect for you.
