That's right, bitches, it's the Wu Tang Clan, creators of some of the best rap in history. If you haven't heard it, get Wu Tang Forever, possibly the greatest double album of all time.
Now discuss the Wu, and how they ain't nothin to fuck with.

They were really awful. Seriously. Dumb, dumb, dumb. God forbid any sort of intelligent, insightful rap music be popular.
Umm, ok?
They just suck. That's all I'm saying.
I'm not saying that they're super concious rappers, but all of them had excellent flow stylings and flair, and the production of RZA was top notch. And they're anywhere near as vapid as most popular rap. Have you heard Wu tang Forever? I personally think they're one of the premier rap groups of the mid-90's.

Well, we have to go back to the eighties up until the early nineties to find this...
Well, no.
Care to set up some names like so many soda cans on a fence?

I'm sure there is insightful rap out there right now, but it is more difficult to find, and on a qualtiy-to-quantity ratio, it doesn't even come close to the time period I mentioned.
But, it seems that you and I will disagree (as usual... ).

I always found their lyrics trite and not very creative. They are as vapid as the rest of popular rap. Most of their songs are about how cool/bad/dangerous they are. The beats are good, but I've heard much better (see El-P or Dan The Automator, among others). And there are waaaay too many people in the group, none of whom impress me at all with their style.

I don't think we're disagreeing here. I'll definitely agree with that statement. Popular rap today is awful, but there's "underground" rap that is some of the best stuff the genre has ever produced. And it's not "underground" like it used to be; it's really pretty easy to find, it's just not advertised on network television or popular radio.
El-P, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, Cannibal Ox, MF Doom, Sage Francis/Non-Prophets, among others, if you want names.

Yeah, I think you've got the completely wrong idea of them, even from a factual standpoint. Their lyrics don't usually try to tell a lame stroy or talk about busting caps or cars or chicks. More often they seem more almost stream of conciousness poetry, and they throw out references from every area of life, including mathematical theroems, ice cream parlors and voltron. A lot of their songs have nothing to do with how cool/bad/dangerous they are, as little as those other rappers you mentioned, in fact. I'd suggest you give them a second chance before completely dismissing them.

I like wu tang better than any other rap artists ever. Thier lyrical talent of thier mcs cant be denied. Rzas production at its best is at the top of the game.
Gzas Liquid swords
wu tang forever
iron flag
raekwons cuban lynx
masta killas no said date
all untouchable
plus a number of soundtrack/bsides that stand out.
Id say compared to 90 percent of hip hop they are socially conscious. and lyrically weak? come on, thats what made wutang famous.

There's a difference between stream-of-consciousness and nonsense.
