Kimbrough Tribute Features Fiery Furnaces, Spiritualized, Iggy, and More
by Devorah Klein | 11.30.2004

Fourteen admirers sing the songs of Fat Possum Records legend Junior Kimbrough on the forthcoming tribute album, Sunday Nights: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough. To be released January 11 2005, the album features covers by Fiery Furnaces, Pete Yorn, Cat Power, and a reformed Iggy and the Stooges. Iggy was a big fan of Junior’s and even invited him to open for him on his 1996 tour.

Many of the artists present on the tribute were already doing covers of Junior’s work out of sheer admiration. The Black Keys had Junior covers on The Big Come Up and Thickfreakness and Jon Spencer covered Junior's "I Feel Good Little Girl" back when he was in The Gibson Brothers. Here, Spencer partners with the late Elliott Smith to cover "Meet Me In the City."

David "Junior" Kimbrough began playing music as a child, but didn’t record a full-length album until 1992 when he was 62 years old. All Night Long got Junior some national recognition and bands like the Rolling Stones and Sonic Youth began making the trek to his Mississippi club to hear him play. Junior still never got the full credit he deserved when he died in 1998, but this tribute serves as a testament to his greatness. Here is the track listing:

1. You Better Run (version #1) - Iggy and the Stooges
2. Sad Days Lonely Nights - Spiritualized
3. Meet Me In the City - Blues Explosion with Elliott Smith
4. Done Got Old - Heartless Bastards
5. My Mind is Rambling - The Black Keys
6. I'm Leaving - The Fiery Furnaces
7. I Feel Good Again - Pete Yorn
8. Do the Romp - Cat Power & Entrance
9. All Night Long - Mark Lanegan
10. Release Me - Thee Shams
11. Done Got Old - Jim White
12. Lord Have Mercy On Me - Outrageous Cherry
13. Pull Your Clothes Off - Whitey Kirst
14. Burn In Hell - The Ponys
15. You Better Run (version #2) - Iggy and the Stooges

I'm really excited about this, especially the Black Keys and Cat Power songs.
