Album is streaming over at iTunes for those interested.
It's freakin fantastic. Not only did they return to the days of dynamics, but the SONGS are good!
Really couldn't turn it up too loud, the rip is obviously lacking in overall dynamics but I heard the old school production really coming through. Really can't wait to get my discs, pre-ordered the deluxe edition through MusicToday so I won't see that one for a while, but ordered the super deluxe through Amazon which I should have release day.
Didn't compare the two but it seemed like Tim's guitar work was a bit higher in the mix for Gaucho than the pre-album single, could be me though. Mercy is one of my favorite tracks of the year.

To very different albums, lyrically they seem to hit a few of the same notes but that just seems to be where Dave has been for a while now. I will say that this one will benefit more from a dedicated headphone listen than BW.

better than big whiskey?
unlike big whiskey, this is a record where no song immediately repulsed me. subsequent listens haven't changed that. so, yes. i will say i don't think there are as many radio friendly, easily accessible songs on this album, and i am definitely curious how some of them will translate live. away from the world feels like the band challenged themselves on every song, which i don't think i've felt about any of their other post lillywhite albums (big whiskey had its moments, at least). dave's lyrics still kind of suck, and as oasisfan said don't really bring anything new to the table.
it is very clear to me that dave matthews band makes their most interesting music with steve lillywhite. i'm not going to say "they're back!!!!111" or anything, but damn is it refreshing to enjoy their new music instead of being disappointed by it.

I thought Chris Martin had the most-ridiculously terrible lyrics category wrapped up after that abortion that Coldplay released last year. It now appears that David J. Matthews may be giving him a solid run for his money.

I kind of chuckle whenever people complain about DM's lyrics. He's never been a great lyricist. This band has always been about the music. The lyrics are what they are. He has some decent moments on the record and some absolutely ridiculous nonsensical moments. But musically and melodically, it's a very good sounding record. Hard to tell how the production is b/c the only thing out there right now is a web rip, but it's clear Lillywhite brings the best out of these guys and is really great in the studio

But there are different categories of bad, and some of these songs are extremely bad.
I would disagree with the implication that all of DMB's albums aren't up to par lyrically though. I thought that BTCS and the LWS were pretty decent. Hell, before they changed it, the original Captain had some of the best lyrics of the band's catalogue.
