The 2 essential ATCQ albums are:

People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm - maybe a little more of a fun, accessible album, with the hits "Can I Kick It" and "I Left my Wallet in El Segundo." But that shouldn't dissuade you from checking it out. It might be the best debut album in hip-hop history.

The Low-End Theory - where the production on People's was dense, this album is stripped down to the bone. Jazz bassist Ron Carter contributes bass lines to many of the tracks, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed's production pairs them with Q-Tip and Phife's sometimes abstract, sometimes hilarious, sometimes conscious verses to create one of hip-hop's most poetic statements ever. Guests like Leaders of the New School (featureing then-memenr Buta Rhymes) and Brand Nubian make memorable guest appearances.

edit - Midnight Marauders is very, very good, but it's not quite a classic like their first two albums are.

As much as I love those three albums, I can't really recommend their last two.

....buggin out..i think its tribes best song!!

One of the best rap songs i've ever heard. love that song. and the album. what was the cd before they put out the love movement? the first song on that cd is awesome and then goes to crap really fast. seeing them open up for the beasties and seeing q-tip do get it together with the beasties is one of my favorite concert experiences ever.

Beats, Rhymes and Life was the name of that cd.

I'll rephrase that. What i remember i didn't like. I'll have to break it out and listen to it again; give it another chance. Plus it gives me an excuse to hear phony rappers. haven't heard that song in awhile..

I've been listening to this cd for almost 2 weeks straight so i gotta give credit where it's due. you were 100% correct bugs. maybe i should refesh my memory before typing in a message. I seriously think there's 1 song on it i don't care for, but you were right. This cd is a ton better than i gave it credit for.

Beats, Rhymes & Life is a great album. I'll never understand the hate for it.

One of my favorite Tribe songs is 'Peace, Prsperity & Paper.' It's a non-album track from the High School High soundtrack.

I need to listed to these guys - it's been too long. Pharcyde and Black Sheep have been getting a lot of plays recently though.

midnight marauders is my favorite ATCQ album. the best balance of phife/q-tip, stellar production (some of the low end theory songs sound a bit dated now), and no guest stars hogging the mic (i'm looking at you, consequence).

also, i learned from this thread that SuperNintendoChalmers had entered the realm of self-parody sometime before January 23rd, 2007

Totally agree. Back in the 90's I thought the Low End Theory was the best hip-hop album ever made. Now, there are some songs (I'm looking at you Sky Pager) that do indeed sound horribly dated. Around the early '00s, I started thinking Midnight Marauders is the better of the two albums, but Low End is still pretty amazing.
