What are the best volumes of Dick's Picks? I'm guessing most of the late 60s/early 70s stuff is all golden. I'm downloading a few right now.

Also, last year I heard a very very amped-up Dead performance from the late 70s. I think it was from Dick's Picks, but it was deleted from my computer. Very loud and feedback-heavy. Would anybody here know which one that was by any chance?

I've always heard that the 1977 shows are where it's at, but I'm not a big fan.

Allmusic has reviews of almost all of them.

I only have the compilation of the Compltete Filmore West 1969 Recordings, that one kicks ass.

Vol 4 is great. It's actually parts of two shows from the Fillmore East 2/13 and 2/14 1970. Great, trippy Dark Star.

Vol 8 is a must have show. 5/2/70 from Harpur College Binghampton,NY. Acoustic/Electric and it's amazing.

Generally speaking, I dig shows from70-71, 77, and 89-91.

Lots of great SBD's torrents at
http://bt.etree.org/index.php?search=&cat=8

Made it to just over 100 shows myself throughout the late 80's/early 90's. Good times.

I agree with Vol 8. Vol 16 is pretty solid too.

Vol. 16 is nice, as is 22, which is the last in the series that I have.

So many damn live volumes to get into, I imagine it'll be like this for Pearl Jam fans in the future.

Pearl Jam is getting closer with this tour. But I remember going to GD shows in the early 90's and getting a printout of all the different songs they sang on the summer tour and they were up in the 120's. I think PJ is closer to 100 (which is amazing cause Ed sings 99% of the songs).

I'd stay away from the Dick's Picks series, they just sound too damn good, too clean for a Dead show. There are tons of soundboards availabe and if this was a year ago, I'd tell you to go to the archive http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=GratefulDead&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fyear
But now you can only stream them.

I also highly recomend subscribing to the Dead podcast on iTunes. It's done by a professor from MO, and he does an hour show each week with really choice shows.

Go to bt.etree and just hop on the show with the most seeders, can't really go wrong that way as well.

If your hellbent on a Dick's Picks I'll say:
Dick's Picks Vol. 12: Providence Civic Center, 6/26/74
I love 74
Dick's Picks 15 CD (9/3/77)
77, enough said.

ps- don't sleep on 80s-era shows.

volume 27 has a cover of tomorrow knows if your interested in that, but the rest of it is only mediocre compared to the rest. It's pretty hard to go wrong with a DP, but i personally would recommend staying away from shows with a majority of stupid ass songs like samson and delilia and ramble on rose with poor jams.

one of my first shows was an acoustic from 1970. I think the date was 7/14/70, its got an amazing version of How Long Blues.
