do you think the song was affected in any way because you delayed your agreement? I do.

Live At The Olympia is fucking awesome. Stipe sounds great. I've been listening to this album all week too. Living Well Is The Best Revenge blows the doors off.

Dear R.E.M. fans:
What is a 'hairshirt'?
a hairshirt is a shirt made of human hair people wore to punish themselves.

It's a garment used in religious devotion to induce pain and discomfort as a sacrifice to God. In the same way that monks back in the day would whip themselves to simulate the suffering of Christ before his crucifixion.
When Stipe says hang your hairshirt on the lowest rung he's saying stop beating yourself up.

A few weeks ago, my best friends mum passed away. When I was a little kid, she was kind of like a cross between an aunt and a grandmother to me. I hadn't seen her since at the latest 2003. The reason I'm posting this here, is that last week I heard Nightswimming for the 1st time since. After so long I just took in the lyrics. The second time was yesterday. I was behind the wheel and holding back the tears. It flooded back at bedtime. I didn't want to mention it to my wife when I just wanted to get to sleep, so held them back again. After all those years trying to find a meaning to the words (I always found the clarinet solos more emotional as you can dictate their meanings) it looks like I've finally managed it.
As far as draining penultimate songs go, I've gotta say it has the best last song for that situation I've heard. It's not happy enough for you to think "turn that shit off, I've just heard nightswimming", which kind of makes the song more of a recovery than it would be otherwise.

No worries. I feel more for my best friend and his dad. I feel like an arsehole for not seeing her for so long, but then I guess that's life. You can only try and limit your regrets.
