i looked into buying that, because i think it'd be just what i need regarding that era of rem, but then i realised i already have two rem best of compilations, and i absolutely refuse to shell out for a third.

That`s definately their best era, for me anyway, and I bought it mostly for the rarities and the booklet, since I have all their records.
And I can`t wait for the DVD, finally some of that old material that was previously only available on VHS is out on DVD. I`m hoping to get that today.
It's a better set of songs than eponymous and the rarities on Disc II are fun. It's a first rate introduction and the b-sides make it worth it for die hards. If you have the albums and aren't interested in tracking down the rareities (and REM rareties usually aren't that good) it is not that necessary

I am too, but compare dead letter office to lost dogs. PJ b-sides could be on records. By and large REMs couldn't (especially the early years).

I agree completely.
Actually, the best part about DLO is the liner notes. Peter is hilarious sometimes. But I enjoy some of the tracks a whole lot too, especially their Pylon cover "Crazy".

Back in, like, junior high I signed up for with Columbia House to purchase a bunch of CD's. That REM album with the "What's the Frequency Kenneth" song was on the list of CD's I bought. Oops.
Didn't take me long to trade it in to a used CD store.

Monster isn't one of their best, but it's still a pretty cool album. Strange Currencies is great.
This compilation seems like a pretty good breakdown of their first 5 albums. If you pair this with the "In Time" collection, I think that makes for a nice little collection for beginners. I own all of the IRS albums and I'm not particularly interested in the b-sides, so there is no need for me to pick this one up.

Great freaking album, I just adore Electrolite. It's been so long since I've played it, I think that I'm going to give it a spin.

I had it in my hands today at Best Buy but I was pissed that they didn't have a copy of Okonokos from MMJ so I left the store in a foul mood. I think I will grab this one though. Really soon.
