MASSIVE interview/profile in the New Yorker. I've never been a huge Springsteen fan (beyond Nebraska and Ghost), but I thought it was fascinating, especially how he views performing and reconciles his wealth with his lyrics.
I couldn't help thinking that you can see a lot of modern-day PJ in Springsteen's philosophy, especially in terms of the live show. No doubt Bruce is one of Ed's mentors. It's also refreshing that Springsteen doesn't hide from the fact that he views the show as theatre, and that he wasn't afraid to show that something like the Clemons/Frederici tribute is completely rehearsed.
Edit: the stuff about his father was interesting, and T-Bone Burnett's quote is certainly applicable to Vedder as well.

unfortunately, i agree. i wish eddie vedder would just be eddie vedder instead of trying to be bruce.
.
I agree and I don't. Certainly, an artist inherently derives inspiration from other artists they respect. Bruce's approach was not independently derived; the article made it pretty clear that he was always trying to be the rock-and-roll James Brown.
On the other hand, you could certainly say that Vedder/PJ are modelling themselves too closely after an artist that plays in the same playground as them (again versus Springsteen and JB).

Like I said, I'm no super fan of Springsteen, but I feel like I should see him once. Same with Neil Young, and guess what, both are in Pittsburgh in October! Unfortunately, with these two artists, that also means that I am out a ton of cash if I go to both.

i dont think what im talking about is just "inspiration". im pretty sure eddie vedder has always been a bruce fan, so bruce has always inspired him. its in the recent years where eddie vedder seems to be modelling his stage presence after bruce.

One of the few things I recall from the RS PJ article that was all about Ed was his meeting Bruce and finding some kind of solace in stating that he'd (the Boss) had helped with his father issues. This was during S/T so I can see the live gig change toward paying tribute taking over a bit too much.
Actually just this weekend, talking to a pal that I've been to a few PJ gigs with and we've both seen Bruce, I made clear that should PJ come around again I don't think I'd go but I will not miss a Springsteen show. Will be trying for Hartford tix in August.

Bruce Springsteen's known for his marathon shows, but the Boss has set himself a new record.
At Springsteen and the E Street Band's final European show on the current "Wrecking Ball" tour, the group played four hours and six minutes at Helsinki, Finland's Olympic Stadium, according to fan reports. The tour's been full of lengthy shows, with the band reportedly clocking in at 3:48 during a Madrid, Spain gig on June 17.
And the 33-song set's run time doesn't count a handful of songs Springsteen played in acoustic form as a treat for pre-show early birds.
U.S. fans can start their stopwatches this summer, with the band returning to North America beginning August 14 in Boston. The tour will extend through December, with the final current date scheduled for Dec. 6 in Glendale, Ariz.
Helsinki Setlist (via Backstreets Magazine )
Pre-Show Acoustic Set:
I'll Work For Your Love Leap of Faith No Surrender For You Blinded By the Light
Setlist:
Rockin' All Over the World Night Out in the Street Loose Ends We Take Care of Our Own Prove It All Night ('78 intro) Wrecking Ball Death to My Hometown My City of Ruins Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street? Be True Jack of All Trades Downbound Train Because the Night Lonesome Day Darlington County Light of Day Shackled and Drawn Waitin' on a Sunny Day Back in Your Arms The Rising Badlands Land of Hope and Dreams
We Are Alive Born in the U.S.A. Born to Run Detroit Medley Glory Days Dancing in the Dark Tenth Avenue Freeze-out I Don't Want to Go Home Higher and Higher Twist and Shout
AKA Kiss my ass Rolling Stone: "Contrary to widespread belief, Bruce Springsteen has never actually played a four hour concert."
The show the other night was tremendous yet again. Quite a few moments that make you feel like you're involved and seeing something so fresh. He is a great performer and the way the band gels is almost magical. The sign collection has been changed from a set two to three song mid-set inclusion to being cherry picked selections as the night moves on. I got Pink Cadillac,Incident on 57th Street and For You, all amazing.
