Guys, Guns n' Roses have never been less than an embarassingly bad band.
stop making me so angry and sad at the same time.
If he's saying that they've 'never been less than a bad band', then does that make them a good band? Maybe you should be angry, sad and confused.
In all seriousness, I don't care what anyone says, GnR were untouchable for about 4-5 years there. I only wish they had continued on in a Stones-esque way through the 90's.

Saying that GnR were always "embarrassingly bad" means not recognizing the talent of the musicians that this band once consisted of because their singer is an ass, which is pretty stupid.
Increasingly, Slash seems like one of those guys who I wish would have wound up in a different genre of music--the guitar playing in songs like "Estranged" and "November Rain" and "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is spot-on melodically, and he can make that Gibson fucking sing. I'd love to hear him record an entire instrumental record in that vein, with none of the wah-wah, shred-shred, etc. that occupied the rest of his time in GNR.
Apart from him, though, I don't know that I find anyone else in GNR especially remarkable as a musician. I mean, they were proficient enough, but you can still be proficient and make rotten music. One could argue that as the calling card of the entire 1980's metal genre, honestly. I'll always have a special spot for GNR in my heart--it was some of the first music I truly loved as a kid--but more and more I'm coming around to the spenno/Jorge school of thought. I'm going to listen to the "Illusion" records soon to see how much of that impression is of the music itself and how much of it is just revisionism based on what Axl has become.

Guns N Roses were the first rock band I got into as a teenager, about a year or so before I found Nirvana and PJ etc. I have no interest in listening to them now, but I have no problem in recognising their first records (AFD especially) as being important in their relevant genres.
There are interesting parallels between Ten and AFD. Both bands' members are adequately proficient but unremarkable, but both sets of songs are based on solid hooks which sound a little weathered and dated 20 years on, but still hold up a lot better than most of the 80s classic rock. Both albums had singers with captivating voices with unusual nuances. The key difference is that Eddie had empathy and compassion as a lyricist, and that Axl, at heart, was a bit of a dick. That difference eventually led PJ away form the genre into interesting places, and left GNR with the inevitable route towards self-destruction.

Guns 'n' Roses was a good band for their time but in my opinion have not aged well at all. Especially Axl Rose's voice (I don't mean his current voice, I mean his voice on the albums). Lyrically too. Seems like for every gem like "Estranged" there's a couple turds like "Get In The Ring" or "Back Off Bitch." They were huge because they had a great debut album with tons of hooks, but they got too big too fast and well before they had really earned it. They went from Hollywood to the big time practically overnight and it's no surprise they crumbled under the pressure.

Use your illusion have great songs too, but yeah it was too much for those guys, specially when they were as fucked up as them.
