ill second that dance the devil and setlist. both great great records. However, in my opinion, the others streuggle to reach said greatness. Seeing them live, the songs take on a new form and they are excellent.

but you're right, they are SO much better live than on record, as good as their records are. kinda bummed their upcoming Mpls show was moved from the Cedar to First Ave, but either will be awesome. i just hope they're able to fill FA for the most part.

I'm not sure how to describe them, but I would sort of go with atmospheric and anthematic if that makes sense. I haven't listened to all of their albums, but it seems to me their songs tend to be a little ballad-like but with a little more umph to them. I mostly listen to The Cost, which I enjoy quite a bit.

I'll take this one, because they are friends of mine. They are basically a folk/indie rock band. They have electric fiddle solos instead of guitar solos. Influences: The Pixies, Grant-Lee Buffalo, and Glen's 'holy trinity': Dylan, Cohen, and I forget the third one. An amazing live band. Glen doesn't tell as many stories as he used to (he could go on a bit), although he's an extremely charismatic and passionate frontman and guitar player. Colm is an amazing fiddle player, too, which is just as well, as he's integral to the band's sound. Rob, the guitar player, used to work as an engineer in Stevve Albini's Electrical Audio studio in Chicago (Rob's a Yank), and Glen offered him a job when The Frames recorded 'For The Birds' there. You'll find Rob's name (Rob Botchnik) on the credits as an engineer on the Zwan album. Their most popular studio LP is 'For The Birds', although it's not my personal favourite (the honour goes to 'Dance the Devil' and 'Fitzcarraldo').
The songs are all different: anthemic, quiet, loud, sometimes all in the same song. And the lads are great craic. Bob Dylan's personally invited them to support him on the forthcoming Oz tour, so they're going. Glen was also in the Commitments movie, all them years ago, and is now starring in 'Once'.
That's about as much as I can cram in here in a reasonable amount of time. I'm missing so much. Check them out here:

If I remember correctly, when my mate Paddy supported Dylan in Galway, the supports don't get near the fucker!

Not sure. Go and ask 'em on the Frames board at theframes.ie. For the record, 'Star fucking Star' is the only Frames song I fuckin' loathe. Of course, they play it at (nearly) every gig.

Just saw the boys last week in Vicar St, Dublin. First time I saw a gig o' theirs since The Point show in November 2005. T'was a great show. No 'Fitzcarraldo' , but also no 'Star Star' .
Not too many new tunes for some reason, but a nice long set, including a lot of 'Dance the Devil' tunes. I had a great time, and the aftershow was mayhem as well.
Rob Botchnik is also selling a solo album at the gigs. They've also little round metal 'Eighball' badges for 1 Euro a pop, which did great as cuff links for my shirt for my mate's wedding in Cork last Friday
