an elliott smith fan would, because he raised the bar much higher than the national has jumped. don't get me wrong if you like your music coming in two levels "quiet" and "quiet with percussion" then the national is the band for you.

I just want some good new music.
what do you listen to normally? judging by questioning the national, you just want music that's new to you, and not music that's just released. correct?

Elliott Smith is a fantastic lyricist and songwriter, but come on dude, if you're unaffected by The National, what is Smith doing that's so different?

Elliott smith's songwriting is much more surprising, dynamic, less repetitive. The way things change note to note, chord to chord move me through the song, while The National i feel like is the musical equivalent to waiting in line for a movie you've seen before but aren't to fond of. I find myself waiting for something i know is going to come, and it comes way after i've lost interest, and when it does come its not that satisfying.

Ok. Disagree--in fact, I mostly feel the opposite. But I can respekt that.
