I had a dream a while back kind of similar to this video, only BPB was walking through Brooklyn playing the guitar and hipsters were exploding when they heard his music.

Well, it kind of destroys any memory of the heartbreaking melancholy of the original. I'm not sure I wanted a jingly jangly version stuck in my head.

I like that. That EP should be good.

Anyone check out the record with Trembling Bells? I'm pretty lukewarm, but its only based on one half assed listen.

so I've been through the mix KD sent me a few times. I really like this guy's voice. I'm not in love with his songs. There are some exceptions. I liked My Home is the Sea and New Whaling. I really liked Ease Down the Road and I loved Gulf Shores. The later two are probably going to be regular listens going forward. great songs.

I usually liked his writing but didn't often love it. There is an off kilter charm to a lot of his phrasings that I can see being really appealing, and he has some nice images. Ease Down the Road in particular was really clever.

I think the songs of his I liked were the ones that sounded like they were moving forward. Not quite road songs, especially since so many of them were about standing still (like Gulf Shores), but there was still momentum in those songs that I liked alot. The ones that sounded like they were standing still (not moodier, since these were mostly all moody songs) musically, rooted in a particular place, lost me a bit. I liked his voice best when it was being carried along.

I may seek out more of him. If Ease Down and Gulf Shores are on the same record I'll probably try and track that one down.

Thanks, KD :)

I can't say that I've ever actually watched video of him. He handles all of this well, to say the least.

Watching him perform he seems like one of those people who couldn't actually be a real person, but he regularly gives great, down-to-earth interviews.

Reading through this thread I'm trying to decide whether to round out my evening by listening to "Lie Down in the Light" or "Wonder Show of the World." I think I'm going to go with the latter.

I actually think Kelly plays on both records, but is much more central to "Wonder Show." His playing on "Teach Me To Bear You" cradles my soul like a little babe.

I should really make it a point to check out some more of this man's work.

I think that we could all make a point to check out more of this man's work, and still not reach the end. It's overwhelming. I own maybe six albums and a few singles from him, each coming with a fresh voice.

Re: Wonder Show-The album as a whole is not anything like Wilco's A Ghost is Born, yet I've always thought that 'Teach Me to Bear You' and 'Hell is Chrome' are twins, seperated at birth. The structure, the album placement, the mood... It's like Tweedy, Oldham, and everyone else involved got a hold of the same musical juju all at once.

I was referring to Emmett Kelly, but I suppose I could apply it to Oldham as well. I think I have most if not all of his major studio releases under the BPB moniker, but I've never really cracked the rapidly expanding discography of singles and EP's that seem to come out every couple months. This site seems like a pretty exhaustive reference: http://users.bart.nl/~ljmeijer/oldham/

I've searched a few times for a torrent or something with all his non-album material in one convenient bundle, but have never had much luck.

I will have to test your BPB/Wilco theory.

You've been a fan for much longer than I have, I think. I've been playing catch-up (not too well, as it turns out) since about 2009. It's not easy taking multiple albums in at once. Each has it's own personality and sense of humor, not to mention lyrical weight. I could listen to Wonder Show twelve different times and still not fully grasp it. And you expect me to do the same for Wolfroy? And Lie Down? The earlier stuff? Oh boy.

BPB is one of those rare artists who makes me notice the lyrics first, and then I let the music open it all up.
