I mean, you can't blame them for the fact that their fans and the music press will lap up the most boring shit as a matter of course, you can't blame them for making boring unimaginative music if the rewards are there; however, to turn the whole of their enterprise into one safe-play giant pussy parade, that is unacceptable.

What I mean is, live shows where you pay your money, take your place at the front, watch the band just standing there, bored out of their minds, playing the same set list they've been playing every night for the last year. If not that, the feigned excitement, the "spontaneous" gags they do all the time. The disingenuous "I'm so glad to be a muzician im so happeeeee". The notion that "selling-out" is no longer a bad thing because everyone's doing it, the idea that you have to cross over with worthless cultural items that music was meant to be an escape from in the first place. The poisonous materialistic greed that has risen to the surface again so dramatically in the last few years in all forms of music.

There wasn't a single notable song about 9/11--is that not worrying?

The chance of a popular musician sincerely saying something untoward about a major corporation is practically non-existent. Even if they did, that would be seen as a faux-pas by the ironic assholes in addition to the record companies.

Oh, and in addition to the gutlessness of pretty much every contemporary musician, the music is pretty much all terrible too.

Who are the kids going to dream about being? Who are the old going to see in a brilliance that could not have been possible in their own time?

Nah, not really, but I do love when that happens. I don't think there's a better fit for a Crayola commercial than Animal Collective.

But didn't you start listening to indie because you were uneasy with the lack of any artistic and moral principles in mainstream music? Haven't you declared on a number of occasions that rap music is horrible and one of your main arguments was that that it was vapid and promoted consumerism?

But now that Gay Collective is happy to exploit their indie popularity, which came about as a result of people not wanting to listen to mainstream music--the main reason for which being that they found it "too corporate"--you're happy to declare your love for their ironic (post-ironic?) cashing in on a reputation that you helped to build?

Animal Collective are complete frauds who built their band around a sort of vaguely environmentalist anti-corporate stance, and cashed in on the indie credibility as soon as they could see their popularity reaching its peak. Are you telling me you're happy to admit to being a fan of such a band? You're just going along with the Pitchfork/indie stance, which "surprisingly" just came out of a period of strong anti-capitalism, and opened its arms to the new, indifferent stance on cashing in the second they saw that cred rock was profitable.

What exactly do you want the songs to be about, King? Imagery of planes crashing into the tower? The feeling of being held hostage by the terrorists? A song with a first-person account of the actual destruction would be exploitive, not to mention extremely insensitive.

There were plenty of "notable" songs that dealt with the collective loss and sadness following 9/11. Some artists made whole albums about it. We all saw 9/11 on TV, and maybe some of us even know people who lost someone during that tragic incident. We don't need Train singing about that day's events to remind us.

Bob Dylan used to write exploitive and insensitive songs all the time.

bands like rhcp, u2, metallica, rem, and even pearl jam. they are all made of excellent musicians. they are all talented, even tho not all enjoy hearing the singers. my point, each of the bands has the money and skill to create something notable. it may be excellent, it may flop, but still something different and notable. yet they dont. i guess pleasing your fans is a major factor, as is the garunteed cash, but the tameness about is resulting in medocre albums.

King,

Slapshot - Fuck New York

Start spreading the news, because it's in your face
I guess if you like the smell of piss, it's the perfect place
The city that never sleeps, is the city I wish would die
But two planes later and you're still there, keep looking at the sky

Fuck Giuliani
Fuck Woody Allen
Fuck CBGB's - Fuck New York!

Fuck Seinfeld
Fuck Famous Rays
Fuck Times Square - Fuck New York!

Fuck the Upper West Side
Fuck the Lower East Side

Turn on my TV and New York is everywhere
This city filled with shit, it is poisoning the air
Dirty scumbags begging change and litter in the street
The smell of trash, roasted nuts and homeless in the heat

Fuck Central Park
Fuck the port authority
Fuck Grand Central - Fuck New York!

Fuck Soho
Fuck Wall Street
Fuck Battery Park - Fuck New York!

Fuck the Giants
Fuck the Rangers
Fuck Madison Square - Fuck New York!

Fuck Spanish Harlem
Fuck the U.N.
Fuck Greenwich Village - Fuck New York!

Fuck the Brooklyn Bridge
Fuck the Holland Tunnel
Fuck the FDR Drive - Fuck New York!

Fuck the Empire State
Fuck the Chrysler
Fuck Joe Torre - Fuck New York!

Fuck Radio City
Fuck Lincoln Center
Fuck St. Patrick's - Fuck New York!

Fuck Hell's Kitchen
