According to the latest issue of Paste, the lead singer/bassist (Shingai Shoniwa) grew up in East Africa. Prior to forming The Noisettes in London she and the guitarist "co-scored a Harlem-themed musical".
So far I've heard six full songs from What's the Time, Mr. Wolf, and I kind of like all of them. "Bridge to Canada", which sounds like a Sam Roberts chorus surrounded by Mitch Mitchell-style drumming, "Cannot Even (Break Free)", and "Don't Give Up" are my favorites. "Sister Rosetta (Capture the Spirit)" and "Scratch Your Name" each have a strong chorus, and "Never Fall in Love" is like a beautiful Ane Brun acoustic duet. My main problem is getting past Shingai's voice, which for me doesn't always work with the music. Judging from various online comments, some people flat out can't stand her voice. Right now, "Sister Rosetta" is available as a free download on iTunes and the entire album is going for $6.99.
