Too many commercially-minded compromises to be their best. It's their most accessible and immediate album to be sure, but it's like the people who say Some Girls is the Stones' finest. Yes, it may be their best if you don't care about context, but if you don't care about context why would you be listening to a band like Dinosaur Jr. in the first place? Wouldn't CAKE be a better fit for your mid-90s alternarock obsession? Albums like You're Living All Over Me and Let It Bleed are more highly regarded for a reason.

It's just the age old problem of when a band releases a highly commercial album that is song-for-song better than anything they've done before. How does one react to that?

I react negatively, because I think it's selling out when a band makes an album that is better than anything they've done before. Clearly.

Dinosaur Jr. weren't meant to make perfect albums. It just isn't rock and roll. Sebadoh on the other hand understood all along how rock music was meant to be made.
Have you considered a blog for all of your vapid, pompous opinions about the state of music and the arcance rules therein? You could make some money through ads or something.

I've tried to listen to Sebadoh, but I can't suffer through it. I find Lou Barlow's non-melodic, bass driven rants a lot more self-indulgent than post-Lou Dinosaur Jr is, and that's saying a lot.

His two songs on Beyond are quite good.
Did Lou write any of the songs that he sings on teh first Dinosaur album, or were they all J's compositions?

All were written by J.

Alright then. I pretty much don't like Lou's compositions.

I can't really say I'm a Dinosaur Jr fan, because I really don't listen to any of their albums much, with the exception of this one. Where You Been? is easily one of my favorite albums of all time. The guitar solos alone were enough to sell me on it.

So you like any of his on the new album? Back to Your Heart is, IMO, one of the best on the album.
