Did you go to the All Stars show? They were fucking awesome... I'm trying to find out who is opening these shows (St. Louis and Columbia were just added). Right now it looks like it just MMJ.

Unfortunately I didn't. I bet they were great. Now I just hope I make it to this MMJ concert.

There are two listening parties going on tomorrow night in Louisville, I might drive down to check them out.

What: Louisville Pre-Release 'Z' Listening Party
When: Friday, Sept 30th from 6-8
Where: The Outlook Inn: 916 Baxter Ave. Louisville

The other Louisville listening party will be on Friday at Cahoot's Bar on Bardstown Road...you know where that is, the old Tewligan's!

Time: 8 p.m.
Place: Cahoot's Bar
1047 Bardstown Road
Louisville, KY

This is just about within walking distance of the Outlook, so feel free to drop in if you like afterwards!

I'm getting my first taste of the new album today. It is intersting I only heard the first two songs and they ae a bit different from the last album. Still sounds good. Just a little different. I need to listen to it some mroe before i make an opinion on the album.

Artwork looks cool though. :)

Here is my little rundown of the album, so if you haven't heard it yet stop reading now.

I listened to this album for the first time this past weekend. I liked it, but wasn't blown away. Nothing really jumped out at me and made me say "This is an amazing album"...One thing that did jump straight out at me was that the reverb on Jim's voice was lacking, and the length of the album (compared to all other MMJ releases) was cut way down.

I bought the album yesterday and have listened to it 3 more times and I completely change my opinion about "Z". This album is pretty f'n sweet. Really worlds beyond what the did in TTF and At Dawn. You can still hear hints of those albums, but for the most part it sounds like a really psycadelic It Still Moves.

The opening track (Wordless Chorus) is pretty laid back, has almost a Regge feel to it. It kinda reminds me of chill 311, music wise. Organ driven and the end of the sog has James just wailing away on the vocals...pretty cool.

Next track "It Beats for You" is probebly my favorite track right now...drums are key in this tune, and it sounds like classic MMJ with a hint of 80's pop when the synth comes in doring the chorus. Really awesome song.

"Gideon" hit me right away in that it sounds VERY close to one of the instrumentals in Touring Band 2000 (Thunderclap maybe???) Anyway, this is another great tune, and any PJ fan should be able to hear this similarity right away.

"What a Wonderful Man" is the perfect example of a song I really didn't like on the first listen. It came of as cheesy and trying to reach something that MMJ wasn't. I can honestly say that I take that back now. This song ROCKS, and I can't wait to hear it live. Such a fun upbeat song.

"Off the Record" is a song I heard for the first time live when MMJ opened for Wilco. I loved it then, and I love it now. This song has 3 distinct parts, and they all go together in some weird MMJ way. Jim James is a genius.

"Into the Woods" is WEIRDOVILLE. I love it, but I read a bunch of MMJ fans really don't care for this tune...its easy to see why they feel that way as this is easily their most experimental song to date.

"Anytime" is just average to me right now, not a highpoint on the record...for me at least.

"Lay Low" is another classic MMJ tune that could have easily been on It Still Moves. Nice extended jam at the end, and this one will be really great to soak in in a live setting.

"Knot Comes Loose" is vintage At Dawn material. This is probebly my second favorite song off the album so far.

"Dondante" is another song I heard live when I saw them back in June. This one gets pretty spacey, and the just builds and builds untill it explodes into thick guitars and Jim just belting it out. I dig it.

Well thats it for now...

That's good. I think "It Still Moves" is awesome. But I also would like to hear Jim James "true" vocals. I don't know how he sounds on Z, but to me, he's got a bit of a "Neil Young" sound that I really dig.
