I recently downloaded a concert by the Boys Next Door playing at Swinburne College Melbourne in 1977. Raw and dirty but really enjoyable.

Interesting covers...

01. Blitzkrieg Bop
02. Aint it funny
03. I'm 18
04. Gloria
05. Who needs you?(that means you)
06. I put a spell on you
07. Commando
08. My Generation
09. Big future
10. These boots are made for walkin'
11. World Panic
12. Louie Louie

So i'm listening to Tender Prey and after the mercy seat ends i pause to catch my breath and think to myself "damn no other song on this album will touch that" and then up jumped the devil comes on and completely floors my ass. unbelievable.

umm i'm still kind of sorting through it myself. i just downloaded all the albums at once and still haven't listened to them all, but i have listened to most of the 80s ones. from her into eternity i'm not very keen on yet, the first born is dead is a definite step up but things still aren't completely gelling. kicking against the pricks is where they do, it seems that using other people's songs helped him to really give an identity to his own music. your funeral i haven't listened to yet. tender prey seems to be the big breakthrough, i liked it tremendously on first listen so all i can say is keep listening to that one, focus on cool things like why the repetition is such an integral aspect to the intensity of the mercy seat. but like i said i just started getting into him so someone else should probably discuss it more.

so after spending the last few weeks listening to this guy this is how i rank his stuff. his albums in general are a little too inconsistent for me but exploring his vast catalogue was fun and i'll put him in my second tier of great artists.

Albums
1. Tender Prey
2. Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus
3. Henry's Dream
4. The Firstborn is Dead
5. Let Love In
6. Kicking Against the Pricks
7. No More Shall We Part
8. The Good Son
9. Your Funeral My Trial
10. The Boatman's Call
11. From Her to Eternity
12. Murder Ballads
13. Nocturama

Top 5 Favorite Songs
1. Loom of the Land (by far)
2. The Mercy Seat
3. Cannibal's Hymn
4. Up Jumped the Devil
5. Hallelujah (despite the weak lyrics)

he's like a cliche of himself in that album, and half the songs just aren't very interesting. that's my take on it anyway.
