I remember their indie hit song "Novacaine For The Soul" and I've heard they sound a bit like Soul Coughing(one of my favorite "other bands"). But I can't compare them since I don't know their work.

Which album(s) would an Eels newbie like myself should start with?

thanks! :peace:

i always recommend Electro-Shock Blues. it's one of my favorite albums of all time. it was written in a really tough time in his life, but it is straight from the heart and very memorable. being a soul coughing fan you'd like this one a lot. Lots of sampling, and good drum beats. i can't say enough good things about this album, and it is perfect to start listening to in the fall, and growing to know it in the winter. you'll get the full effect.

Beautiful Freak is a really good album. it's his simplest album (unless you count the ones under the name "e") the songs are really good, and for 90's fans it is a good stepping stone to get into the more intricate sound. "novocaine for the soul" is on this one.

Daisies of the Galaxy is a great album, but more of a summery album. I'd definitely check out the other two first. This is a good driving down the highway to nowhere album.

Blinking lights and other revelations is kind of like E's life story in an album. this is definitely a great album that I love which I recommend after you know a few other albums. If you listen to this album lying out underneath the stars, you are doing it right.

Souljacker is a pretty great album. smaller amount of great songs. This album is much more fuzzed out than the other ones, but has some really really really good stand out tracks.

Shootenanny is a good album, but probably his weakest. More or less cause he's produced so much great work. Still love a lot of these songs. "dirty girl" is great.

Live at town hall is definitely a great album, but his voice is a lot rougher and the arrangements are different. Really great, i saw him play on this tour. It was a very touching performance, as most of his shows are.

The greatests hits cd isn't a bad place to start. Though electroshock blues, daisies of the galaxy, and blinking lights and other revelations are all albums which should be heard all the way through.

:haha: Love it. He asked for an album and got that nice little write up. And no. I'm not being sarcastic.

I'm probably going to buy E's book the day it comes out in the States; if I'm not mistaken, it's already been released in other places around the world. Anyone read it?

So tonight was the night. I met one of my heroes: E. I left my house around 6:50. I wanted to make sure to buy a copy of his book before the book signing. I had read it already, but I left my copy in Chicago for my brothers to read. (They still haven't :x ) I walked through the streets, which were normal as usual, but a few houses had some really impressive halloween decorations. Anyway, I was very excited, and couldn't wait. In less than an hour I'd be there in front of one my heroes.

I got to the book store, and there were a bunch of chairs lined up. I bought the book and took a seat. They said that Chet (E's band mate) would be reading a passage from the book. They brought out a cardboard cut out of Chet, and played audio of him reading a chapter of the book about when E met angie dickenson his first day in LA and gave her a tape of his recordings. I remembered this chapter of the book very well. I decided to bring a cd of my own recordings. E entered and gave a Q & A session, which he clearly wasn't too into this whole book signing thing. I asked two questions. I felt nervous asking the questions i've never good in front of crowds of people. Then came the book signing. I waited in line feeling buzzed off of my nervousness in asking him questions.

When it came my turn, I walked up to the table he said "oh it's you." I said "yeah it's me. My name's Danny." he started signing the book. I pulled our my cd and put it on the table. He said "what's this?" I said "let's just say i stole your moves, and it's like your angie dickenson tape." he said "so I'm angie dickenson now." I said "Yes, you've finally arrived." He laughed and said he'd definitely listen to it. He may be listening right now, or not at all. I shook his hand said "thanks for everything" and I left the store in inspired and in good spirits. It's been awhile since I've felt inspired. Next week I'll see Conor Oberst which should be another inspiration, but this one as you guys could assume makes my year. :bammer:
