I don't know about the essential. And if you guys don't get anything before windedsailor comes back then just listen to him. I would suggest getting Beautiful Freak or Electro-Shock Blues first. He would suggest Electro-Shock surely, but I think Beautiful Freak I enjoy more.

electro-shock blues is a masterpiece... i'm so reducible. anyway its not exactly a "hi! nice to meet you album" but once you get into the eels its an incredible experience. i still find something new about that album every time i hear it. if you tune into the lyrics, its great storytelling. i'd take this over many of those "greatest albums of all time" any day. its truly something special.

the essential eels is a good starting point, but if you stop there you'll miss a lot of the best parts of his catalog. i mean they are singles, it seems like PJ fans know that doesn't mean the "best of". i'd recommend what i did. downloaded beautiful freak. once i loved that i got the whole catalog, and from there it naturally spread through the catalog. i almost had an eels album that coincided with my life each semester of college. the ones i recommend most are electro-shock blues, beautiful freak, blinking lights and other revelations (this would be a good introduction to his style's but as far as following E's story of his life, this would be toward the end... i'd prefer to go through that chronologically.), daisies of the galaxy, souljacker, shootenanny, then b-sides.

i bought E's autobiography today. i'm stoked.

Going To A Funeral, Pt. I is pretty awesome. I've been listening to Electro Shock a little bit this week. I've had it forever, someone recommended it a while back. Winded, should I get Beautiful Freak?

Yes, definately get Beautiful Freak. It's awesome. Electro... is probably a little better, but BF is awesome. You really can't go wrong with any album. Blinking Lights... really should not have been a double album, imo, but there's a lot of great songs (Trouble with Dreams!). Not an album for a beginner though. Souljacker and Shootenany! are also good ones for someone who doesn't know them well.

I think blinking lights definitely warranted a double album. It may not have had a through line or a grander progression than a collection of songs, but there isn't a bad tune on there. Some really really great songs too. I think it might be my no. 2 of the eels. But its definitely one for people who know the catalog more.

Electro-Shock Blues has been kicking my ass all week. Going To Your Funeral Part 1 is a great song. Dan, I sense some underlying parallels with Self here.

Springfields' lookin' pretty dusty today. Voices tell me... I'm the shit.

nice dude. going to your funeral was the song that opened me up to that album. from that point on it spreads until you love em all. hospital food was the last domino to fall once the lyrics really clicked what they were about.

definitely some self style overlapping. mixture of rock with hip hop beats and sampling. both really well crafted pop song writing. both great bands made up essentially of one guy too.
