I guess I'm going to have to make the trek to Waterloo downtown. None of the big chains in my area including Best Buy even have a section for the band.

i think that Castaways & Cutouts is my fav, but you cant go wrong with any of their 4 albums
Picaresque may be the most acessible (but their stuff is easy to digest, so...anyway)

They have no great records, but each one has 3 or 4 songs that are so remarkably awesome that I keep waiting for their high water mark...it'll be something remarkable, if they don't fuck it up.

i don't know man... i felt this exact same way, then the crane wife came out and i thought it was easily their most solid and consistent release. I'm mega excited to hear what they do next

Castaways & Cutouts came close to being a great record, it has a lot of awesome songs but drags on a bit at times. I like Picaresque, it's not mindblowing but it has great stuff (We Both Go Down Together being my fav on this record) and it's solid. The Crane Wife is just awesome. There might be a couple of songs you could be less excited about after a while, but overall it's a fucking great record with a fucking great closer.

her majesty is my favorite... i feel like the first and last songs on it are the weakest, which is odd cause those usually are the stand out songs by default on most records... but i mean i was meant for the stage, red right ankle, los angeles i'm yours, the soldiering life, chimney sweep, all great songs imo

In other Decemberist news, you might be pleased to know that we are currently recording what will no doubt become our SIXTH record at a barn in an undisclosed location near Portland. Our esteemed management has suggested that you might appreciate a photo documentation of this endeavor, so I conclude by attaching the following snapshot:
