"The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" by the Ben Folds Five was one of the Top 10 albums of the '90's. While Rockin' The Suburbs was good, Ben produced most of his best before he was solo (Although, the song "There's Always Someone Cooler Than You" which he released as a single last year, ranks right up there with his best stuff.

I prefer the Five, but Ben is awesome. I read that his new album is coming out sometime early this year... I hope! It has a song about Elliott Smith on it, apparently, which is awesome...

I like ben his live act is one of the best around. i saw him and the fray opening for him at my school a few years ago. he fucking schooled their asses. I like his music, but im finding myself growing a little bored with his more recent stuff. basically anything he does live is worth seeing/hearing. bff's records are amazing.

I've been a ben folds fan for a long time and I think his major misstep was dumping the rest of the five. I've seen him upwards of seven times, the last probably a couple of years ago and it was depressing. I'd seen bff three of those times and they were amazing. The last time you could tell they were all tired, so it wasn't really surprising when they split. The first time I saw them was in 96, opening for Neil Young which was pretty awesome.
As for his recent output, I think Songs for Silverman blows, but his three EPs had some standout songs (rent a cop, all you can eat, get your hands cover). Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I don't think any of his solo work compares to the best of bff.
