I bought "Brighter than Creation's Dark" on a recommendation from a friend a few years ago, but only listened to it a couple of times. But "I'm Sorry Huston" came up on my Shuffle the other day. I like that song a lot, especially how the melody sinks and settles on the line "Cherokee is too damn far to go back dry". I would like to hear more songs with that feel.

A few years ago a friend sent me a mix of theirs from the albums: Southern Rock Opera, Pizza Deliverance, A Blessing & A Curse, The Dirty South, and Decoration Day. For the most part I like it alright (lots of 3 star songs for me), but the lead singers voice is a bit much for me sometimes. It's like an overly redneck voice, and he's super constipated or something. His voice just seems too forced for me. I don't know, I'm bad at explaining shit like this. Overall, I like them, would see them live, but I'm not crazy about them. For me, they are mediocre to above average.

This is a great band, and a really good live act. The dynamic between Hood's noisy tendencies and Cooley's more traditional song structures makes the albums such fun listens. Sure, they are derivative as hell, but it's an interesting mix of influences and the sincerity in which they sell that Southern attitude that makes me really enjoy DBT. I saw them almost two years ago today and I still think about that show.
I think there are several threads about them already, though. Do a search for "Drive-By Truckers" and "Lefty" and you are bound to find something. He's a huge fan of them.

the redneck thing is sort of a regional preference I guess. I grew up in Texas and lived in Georgia for many years, so it kinda comes naturally to me and I enjoy it. but what I like most about these guys is they are smart enough to be proud of where they are from, but not be blind to the flaws of their roots.
I could see people from other places getting annoyed with this like I get annoyed with Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi, and maybe people from New Jersey 'get it' better than I do. different strokes for different folks.

Shawna Tucker has a good voice, though some people hate it. My roomate described it as sounding like nails on a chalk board, perhaps because she is always just slightly off key. I find that interesting. She hasn't exactly matched that kind of quality songwriting since BTCD, and she only started taking lead vocals after her Ex husband, Jason Isbell left the band. Dancin' Ricky and I Hear You humming from Go Go Boots are both good listens.

Patterson Hood's voice is something to get used to for sure. Even he has admitted he has a bad singing voice, but like Neil Young, he finds ways to make it fit. Having an understanding of where each singer's approach comes from helps. his style came from a more hard rock, punk, kinda 'fuck you' attitude. Mke cooley is a more twangy classical country singers voice, and isbell and tucker have a more soulful approach. having all those different perspectives makes the band interesting, but if you don't care for one singers voice (and Patterson Hood sings most of the songs) then it make sense you wouldnt like him.

See you soon somewhere...
All my love, Shonna

Never cared for her singing much, but she did a good job on the bass. This is bummer news.
I hope they don't go downhill after this.
On a side note: Bring Jason back now!!!!!!!!
lol. he said 'no, I'm a terrible bass player.' when they asked him about going back. Oddly enough I almost caught one of his most recent shows before all of his bands shit got stolen. I am sure they will go on and be just fine, it's been the brain child of patterson hood and mike cooley from day one anyway.

Spot on, man.
absolutely, I lived in Georgia for a long time, I still love the place, but I know it's got it's problems. I don't know if I would equate GA/Alabama to being the same place, though.
