Get Live At Folsom Prison. It has 25 Minutes on it. I think the live stuff is better anyway.

Get the two Prison albums:

Live at Folsom and Live at San Quentin.

Also, If you can afford it the Unearthed Boxset is fantastic. You can't really go wrong with any of his American Recordings, they are all excellent.

This album is good too, I'd buy it for Mr Garfield alone:

Damn. Now I have to go out and buy another cd. It looks worth it for Delia's Gone (have it on vinyl) and Highway Patrolman, one of my favorite Springsteen songs.

tommymctuffytooth,

You are a fine citizen. I shall deem you honorable mention at the coloring book awards show later this month.

Love,
Clark

ive read his biography, and johnny cash has recorded like 2000-3000 songs. i cant remember the exact number but its crazy. so picking an album is hard. your best bet is a live album (the prison ones are great) or a greatest hits. the good thing about all the cash greatest hits albums is that they are all different. they all have different songs or different recordings of those songs. my personal favorite cash hits album is "hello, im johnny cash"

Everything Tom said here is true.

The prison albums are fantastic because you get to hear how wonderful he was live in his prime. His banter with the prisoners is priceless, the performances range from hilarious to heart-wrenching, and you'll own that album until you die.

You cannot go wrong with any Johnny Cash album. And anyone who has not should most definitely read his autobiography "Cash." It's one of the most amazing and inspiring books I've ever read.

RIP, Johnny. We miss you.

You can't go wrong with anything by Johnny. You really can't. Sure some albums are better than others, but that man can't make a truly atrocious album. It's not possible.

With that being said, I would recommend both Live at Folsom Prison and Live at San Quentin. Make sure you get the full show. And then get Unearthed. Definitely get it soon. Don't neglect his Sun Recordings either. The Legend boxset would be an excellent addition to your collection. I think I would actually recommend it over everything else at the moment if you are willing to get it.

Glad you are realizing his greatness. He's way beyond good. It's amazing how many people from different genres he's influenced. Truly a star as a human and a musician.
