I tried not to have huge expectations for this, so I'm liking it. Some songs aren't my cup of tea, but basically I'm really excited to see these guys bow.

I like it. Not as good as I expected, but I expected a lot from Conor and M. Ward. I'm liking it way more than the PJ album that's for sure. Temazcal is probably my favorite song.
yeah, i'm not digging it as much as i thought i would. it's really difficult to bring two musicians together that you like individually. especially when they are two vocalists.

i just want Jim James to fall in love with reverb again. With this album and the last few mmj album's he's moved his vocals further up in the mix and added a slight delay instead. I miss the haunting, hall of reverb sound that he captured on The Tennessee Fire, At Dawn, It Still Moves, and even the All Things Must Pass tribute album. It seems to suit his voice much better than this new treatment. I thought the lack of reverb worked successfully on Z, but then he never turned back.

I agree.

I like the album enough. I would have rathered them all just work on new albums with their respective bands though.

His presence isn't as bad as I expected it could be.
I have this problem. I enjoy some MMJ, but he's treated like a god around here a lot. I think it makes me dislike MMJ more than I do.
I think the reason why people love Jim James (or at least why I love Jim James) is because he has one of those iconic voices that can just soar and completely floor you. I can see how people might not be into his voice, the same way people can hate Neil Young, Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan etc. because their voices are very prominent and very different than the norm. The reason that I find James' voice so endearing (especially on the first 3 MMJ albums) is because it seems so honest, and it feels like he is singing almost beyond his ability. When I listen to music, my ear goes directly to the vocals. If I can hear the sincerity in a singer's voice, something clicks for me...and something definitely clicks with Jim James when I hear him sing. He describes it well, himself, in the song "The Way He Sings" from At Dawn.

i generally find his voice empty, slightly generic, and lacking endearing character. different strokes i suppose.

haha yeah, I know there are a lot of people that feel that way. I just thought I'd share what makes James special for me. I'm a sucker for all the harmonies and reverb though, and that doesn't seem to be your cup of tea. See, I like Oberst, a lot but his voice is so bare and naked sounding that it makes me feel a little uncomfortable. I have the same problem with Elliott Smith. I respect them both a lot as songwriters, but their songs are hard to listen to.
